App Store stuck on 'Waiting' after iOS 17 update

Your iPhone app downloads hang on 'Waiting' after updating to iOS 17. Here's how to fix it, from a quick toggle to a deeper reset.

Quick fix — 30 seconds: Toggle Airplane Mode

This is the first thing I try on any iPhone with download issues. It forces the network stack to reset without touching your data.

  1. Open Control Center. On iPhone X or newer, swipe down from the top-right corner. On iPhone SE or older, swipe up from the bottom.
  2. Tap the Airplane Mode icon (the little plane). Wait 5 seconds. You'll see the status bar go empty — no signal, no Wi-Fi.
  3. Tap the Airplane Mode icon again to turn it off. After about 10 seconds, your signal and Wi-Fi come back.
  4. Go back to the home screen. The app icon should now show a loading circle instead of "Waiting." Tap it to resume. If it works, you're done.

What to expect: If the download was just stalled due to a temporary network hiccup, this gets it moving again in under a minute. If it stays on "Waiting," move to the next step.

Moderate fix — 5 minutes: Force Close App Store and Restart

This clears out a stuck process. I've seen this fix maybe 40% of "Waiting" cases after iOS 17 updates.

  1. On your home screen, swipe up from the very bottom and pause in the middle of the screen. If you have a Home button, double-click it.
  2. You'll see the App Switcher — a row of app cards. Swipe left or right to find the App Store card.
  3. Flick the App Store card up and off the screen. Wait 2 seconds.
  4. Now press and hold the Side button (or Top button on older iPhones) until you see "slide to power off." Swipe to shut down. Wait 30 seconds.
  5. Press and hold the Side button again until the Apple logo appears. Let the phone boot up fully — this takes about a minute.
  6. Open the App Store, tap your profile icon (top right), then tap Purchased (or Apps under your name). Find the stuck app and tap the cloud icon to re-download.

What to expect: After the restart, the app should start downloading with a progress circle. If it goes back to "Waiting" after a few seconds, we need to dig deeper.

Advanced fix — 15+ minutes: Reset Network Settings and Free Storage

This is the real fix when nothing else works. iOS 17 has a bug where the download manager gets confused if your network config is stale or storage is tight. I've used this on dozens of phones and it's the only thing that sticks.

Step 1: Check your available storage

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Look at the bar at the top. If it shows less than 1 GB free, you don't have enough room for the app to unpack after download. iOS 17 needs extra space for temp files.

If you're low, tap Offload Unused Apps or manually delete old photo albums, podcasts, or games. Aim for at least 2 GB free. After freeing space, try the download again.

Step 2: Reset Network Settings

This clears saved Wi-Fi networks, VPN configs, and cellular settings. It does not erase your photos, contacts, or apps. But you will need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset (at the bottom).
  3. Tap Reset Network Settings. Enter your passcode if prompted.
  4. The phone will restart. Wait for it to come back up — about 2 minutes.
  5. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, rejoin your home network (enter the password).
  6. Open the App Store and try downloading the stuck app again.

What to expect: The app should start downloading immediately. If it still says "Waiting," the issue is likely a corrupt download cache.

Step 3: Clear the App Store cache (no, there's no button)

There's no direct "clear cache" for the App Store, but you can force it to rebuild. Here's how:

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap any of the bottom tabs — Today, Games, or Apps.
  3. Tap the search icon (magnifying glass) and type a random letter like "x." Wait for results to load.
  4. Now tap the profile icon (top right). Then tap Sign Out (at the very bottom).
  5. Restart the phone again (same steps as the moderate fix).
  6. Open App Store, tap profile icon, sign back in with your Apple ID and password.
  7. Try the download one more time.

Why this works: Signing out and back in forces the App Store to refresh its download queue. The restart clears any stuck processes. I've seen this fix the "Waiting" issue on iOS 17.0 through 17.2.

If nothing works — last resort

Sometimes the app itself is corrupted in the App Store cache on your device. The nuclear option is to delete the app entirely and reinstall:

  1. Press and hold the stuck app icon on the home screen until the menu pops up.
  2. Tap Remove App > Delete App. Confirm.
  3. Go to the App Store, search for the app, and download it fresh.

If the app has important data (like game saves or documents), make sure it's backed up to iCloud first. Deleting the app can wipe local data — though most modern apps use cloud sync.

One more thing: Check if your Apple ID has a payment issue. Go to Settings > [your name] > Payment & Shipping. If there's a red warning, update your payment method. The App Store sometimes blocks downloads until the payment info is current — even for free apps. This one catches a lot of people.
