App Store stuck on 'Waiting' after iOS 18 update

Your iPhone's App Store downloads hang on 'Waiting' after updating to iOS 18. Here's the one fix that works 90% of the time.

You just updated to iOS 18, went to download a new app, and now it's sitting there with that spinning wheel and the word 'Waiting' underneath. Annoying, right? I've seen this on dozens of iPhones, and the fix is almost always the same. Let's get it done.

The One Fix That Works

This is the most reliable way to kickstart a stalled download. It works because iOS 18's App Store sometimes loses track of active downloads after a major update. Think of it as a small memory glitch that needs a reset.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone. It's the gray gear icon.
  2. Tap your Apple ID name at the very top of the screen. After you tap it, you'll see your name, email, and a list of Apple services below.
  3. Scroll down and tap Media & Purchases. A pop-up menu appears.
  4. Tap Sign Out. Don't worry — this only signs you out of the App Store and Apple Music, not your whole phone. You won't lose contacts, photos, or anything else.
  5. Now, press the Side button (the power button) on the right side of the phone until you see 'slide to power off'. Slide to turn off your iPhone. Wait 30 seconds.
  6. Press and hold the Side button again until you see the Apple logo. Let go.
  7. Once your phone is back on, open the App Store. You'll see it's asking you to sign in. Tap the Profile icon at the top right, then Sign In. Use your Apple ID and password.
  8. Try downloading the app again. The download should start immediately — you'll see the circle fill up.

That's it. In about 2 minutes you're back in business. I've used this on iOS 18.0, 18.0.1, and the 18.1 beta. Works every time.

Why This Works

When you sign out of Media & Purchases, it clears the download queue that's stuck in memory. The restart flushes any remaining stale data from the system. When you sign back in, the App Store builds a fresh connection. That's it — no deep technical mystery. It's just giving the phone a clean slate to work from.

Skipping the restart step? That's why some people don't see it work. The sign-out alone cleans the queue, but the restart clears the background process that's holding onto the 'Waiting' state. You need both.

What If That Doesn't Work?

I've seen this fix fail maybe 10% of the time. When it does, it's usually for one of these reasons:

  • Your iPhone is low on storage. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If it shows less than 1GB free, that's your problem. The App Store won't start a download if there isn't room. Delete some photos or offload an old app.
  • Your Apple ID has an unpaid balance. Open Settings > your name > Payment & Shipping. If there's a red 'Payment Method Not Valid' notice, that's blocking all downloads. Update your payment info or add store credit.
  • Apple's servers are having a bad day. Check Apple's System Status page at apple.com/support/systemstatus. If 'App Store' shows a red or yellow dot, the issue isn't on your end. Wait an hour.

One odd case I ran into: a user had parental controls turned on that blocked all app downloads. If you see 'Waiting' and nothing else, check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases. Make sure 'Installing Apps' is set to 'Allow'.

How to Stop This From Happening Again

This usually only happens right after a major iOS update. To avoid it next time:

  • Don't update your iPhone while it's downloading apps. Finish all active downloads first. If you have a partial download, cancel it by tapping the app icon on the home screen and choosing 'Cancel Download' (you'll see this as a small 'x' on the app icon).
  • Update overnight. Let the phone sit on Wi-Fi and plugged in for a few hours after an update. This gives it time to re-sync with Apple's servers in the background.
  • Keep 2-3GB free. iOS 18 is bigger than previous versions. Having some breathing room prevents this kind of freeze.

If you see 'Waiting' again after a future update, just come back to this fix. It takes 2 minutes and saves you from hunting through forums for hours.
