iOS App Store stuck on loading? Fix it in 3 steps
App Store frozen on a white screen or spinner? Try these three fixes, from a quick toggle to a deeper reset. Most people are done in under a minute.
Why the App Store freezes (and why you're not alone)
You tap the App Store icon. A white screen appears. Or maybe just the spinner keeps spinning. Nothing loads. I've been there — it's frustrating, especially when you're trying to grab an update or a new app.
This usually happens because of a temporary network hiccup, a stuck cache, or a misconfigured date/time setting. Rarely is it a deeper iOS issue. Let me walk you through the fixes, from the simplest (30 seconds) to the nuclear option (15+ minutes). You can stop as soon as the store loads.
Fix 1: The 30-second trick — toggle Airplane Mode
This clears a flaky network session instantly. Don't skip it — it works more than half the time.
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open Control Center (on iPhone X or later, or iPad with iOS 12+). On older iPhones with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom.
- Tap the Airplane Mode icon (the little plane). Wait 5 seconds.
- Tap it again to turn it off.
- Open the App Store again. It should load within 10 seconds.
If that didn't do it, move on.
Fix 2: Force close the App Store and check your date/time (5 minutes)
Two things battle here: a stuck app process and a wrong clock. Fix both at once.
Force close the App Store
- On iPhone X or later, swipe up from the bottom and pause in the middle of the screen. On older iPhones with a Home button, double-click the Home button.
- Swipe up on the App Store card to close it.
- Wait 2 seconds, then reopen the App Store.
Check your date and time
iOS uses your device's time to verify App Store connections. If it's off, the store won't load. This trips up a lot of people.
- Go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Toggle Set Automatically off, wait 5 seconds, then toggle it back on.
- Your iPhone will grab the correct time from Apple's servers.
- Open the App Store again.
Still stuck? Hang tight, the last fix is a beast but almost always works.
Fix 3: The deep reset — sign out of Apple ID and restart (15+ minutes)
This one forces the App Store to rebuild its connection to Apple's servers. It's the last resort, but it handles corrupted local data.
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Media & Purchases.
- Tap Sign Out. You'll need your Apple ID password to sign back in later — make sure you know it before proceeding.
- Now restart your iPhone or iPad. Press and hold the side button and either volume button until you see the slider. Slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds, then press the side button to turn it back on.
- Once the device boots up, go back to Settings > [Your Name] > Media & Purchases and sign in again with your Apple ID.
- Open the App Store. It should show the Terms and Conditions or just load normally.
This fix takes about 15 minutes if you have a stable internet connection. If the App Store still won't load after this, it's likely a server-side issue at Apple — check Apple's System Status page. In that case, all you can do is wait.
When to call Apple Support
If none of these work and the store hasn't loaded for over an hour, there's a rare hardware or software conflict. Contact Apple Support — they can run diagnostics remotely. But honestly, 99% of the time, one of the three fixes above gets you back in.
One last thing: if you're on a corporate network (like at work or school), some Wi-Fi setups block the App Store. Try switching to cellular data to test. If it works on cellular, talk to your IT team.
