iOS App Store Stuck on ‘Waiting’ – Immediate Fix
Your iPhone app download is stuck on 'Waiting'. Close the app, force restart, and—if that fails—sign out of your Apple ID and back in. It’s annoyingly simple and usually works.
You tapped Download, but the app just sits there on 'Waiting' — infuriating, right?
I’ve dealt with this on dozens of iPhones, from the iPhone 12 to the latest iPhone 15 Pro. It happens when the App Store loses connection mid-flight, or when a previous download got corrupted. Here’s the fix that works 9 times out of 10.
Step 1: Force Close the App Store and Retry
Don’t just swipe it away — make sure it’s fully dead.
- On iPhones with Face ID: swipe up from the bottom, pause, then swipe the App Store card up off the screen.
- On iPhones with a Home button: double-click Home, then swipe the App Store card up.
- Wait 5 seconds. Then reopen the App Store and tap the waiting app again.
If it starts downloading, you’re done. If not, move to Step 2.
Step 2: Force Restart Your iPhone
This clears temporary glitches that cause the 'Waiting' state. The method depends on your iPhone model.
For iPhone 8 and later (including iPhone 15, 14, 13, 12, SE 3rd gen):
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side (Power) button until you see the Apple logo (about 10–15 seconds).
For iPhone 7, 7 Plus:
- Press and hold both the Side button and Volume Down button until the Apple logo appears.
For iPhone 6s and earlier:
- Press and hold both the Home button and the Top (or Side) button until the Apple logo appears.
After the restart, open the App Store and tap the app again. It should now download.
Step 3: Sign Out of Apple ID and Back In
If the app still won’t move, your session might be stale. This is the nuclear option that never fails for me.
- Go to Settings > tap your Apple ID name at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Enter your Apple ID password to disable Find My iPhone (if prompted).
- Choose Sign Out again.
- Wait 30 seconds, then go back to Settings > Sign In to your iPhone.
- Enter your Apple ID and password. This may take a minute to sync.
Now open the App Store. The waiting app should start downloading automatically. If it doesn’t, tap it once.
Why This Works
The 'Waiting' state is almost always caused by a corrupted download session. The App Store thinks it’s still in the middle of a download, but the connection dropped or the cache got confused. Force closing and restarting clears the in-memory session, while signing out and back in resets the entire Apple ID authentication layer. It’s crude but effective — Apple’s own support docs recommend this for persistent cases.
Less Common Variations That Look the Same
The App Shows 'Waiting' but Never Starts
This can happen after a failed iOS update. Your phone might have downloaded the update but didn’t install it. Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If you see a stalled iOS update file (like 'iOS 17.4.1' with a 'Remove Update' option), delete it. Then restart and try the app again.
App Stuck on 'Waiting' After Restore from Backup
When you restore from an iCloud or iTunes backup, all apps queue up. If one app gets stuck, it can block the rest. The fix is the same as Step 3 — sign out of Apple ID. If that fails, delete the stuck app from the home screen (long-press > Remove App > Delete App) and re-download it fresh from the App Store.
Multiple Apps Stuck on 'Waiting'
This usually means your Apple ID is having a connectivity issue. Try switching from Wi-Fi to cellular or vice versa. I’ve also fixed this by toggling Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds and back off. If that doesn’t work, go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn Set Automatically off, then back on. A wrong date/time can break App Store authentication.
How to Prevent This in the Future
- Keep iOS updated — older versions have more bugs. iOS 15.0 to 16.1 were notorious for this issue. iOS 17 is better, but not perfect.
- Don’t queue too many downloads at once — the App Store can handle maybe 3 simultaneously. Start one, let it finish, then start the next.
- Check your storage — if you’re under 1GB free, the App Store may refuse to download anything. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and offload some apps.
- Restart your iPhone weekly — this clears cached sessions before they cause trouble. I do it every Sunday morning.
That’s it. The 'Waiting' bug is annoying, but it’s not a hardware problem. Nine times out of ten, a force restart or Apple ID sign-out will get you back to downloading. If you’re still stuck, contact Apple Support — but I’ve never had to escalate this one.
