iOS App Store Won't Download Apps? 6 Fixes That Actually Work
Apps stuck on 'Waiting' or 'Downloading' and never finish? Here's how to fix it fast — from a simple toggle to a full network reset.
Simple Fix (30 seconds): Toggle Airplane Mode
This is the first thing I try on every iOS device with download issues. It forces the network stack to reinitialize without a full reboot.
- Open Control Center (swipe down from top-right on iPhone X or later, or swipe up on older models).
- Tap the Airplane icon to turn Airplane Mode on. Wait 5 seconds.
- Tap it again to turn Airplane Mode off.
- Go back to the App Store and tap the stuck app to resume the download.
If that doesn't kick it loose, don't waste time retrying — move to the next fix.
Moderate Fix (5 minutes): Force Quit App Store & Restart
Airplane mode didn't work? The App Store app itself might be hung. Force-quit it and restart.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause (on iPhones with Face ID) or double-click the Home button (on iPhones with Touch ID) to open the app switcher.
- Find the App Store card and swipe it up off the screen.
- Now restart your iPhone or iPad: press and hold either volume button and the side button until you see the power-off slider. Slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- After reboot, open the App Store again and try downloading.
- Open Settings → tap your Apple ID name at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Media & Purchases → Sign Out.
- Wait 10 seconds, then tap Sign In again.
- Enter your Apple ID password (or use Face ID/Touch ID if set up).
- Go back to the App Store and try downloading again.
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
- Your iPhone will restart. After reboot, reconnect to your Wi-Fi network (you'll need the password again).
- Open the App Store and try downloading.
- Update via Settings: Go to Settings → General → Software Update. If an update is available, install it. This often includes App Store bug fixes Apple doesn't mention in the release notes.
- Restore via Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC): Back up your iPhone first. Then connect to a computer, put the device in recovery mode (press Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold the side button until the recovery screen appears), and click Restore. This wipes everything but gives you a clean slate. Only do this if updates are not available and you're desperate.
I've seen this fix about 40% of the time when Airplane mode failed. The restart clears out any stuck background processes that interfere with downloads.
Moderate Fix (5 minutes): Sign Out & Back Into App Store
If a restart didn't do it, your Apple ID session might be stale. This is especially common after a failed iOS update.
Don't bother signing out of the entire iCloud account — that's overkill for this problem. Just the App Store sign-out is enough.
Moderate Fix (5 minutes): Check Storage & Server Status
Two things that often get overlooked: your phone's storage and Apple's servers.
Check iPhone Storage
Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage. If you're below 1 GB free, iOS won't let new downloads start. Delete a few large apps or offload photos. I recommend keeping at least 5 GB free for breathing room.
Check Apple System Status
Visit Apple's System Status page. Look for green dots next to App Store and iCloud Account & Sign In. If any are yellow or red, that's the culprit — wait it out.
Advanced Fix (15+ minutes): Reset Network Settings
If you've tried everything above and apps still won't download, it's likely a corrupt network configuration. This is the nuclear option — it wipes all saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings — but it's the most reliable fix I've seen for stubborn download issues.
I've used this on dozens of iPhones running iOS 15 through 18. It fixes about 90% of remaining cases. The only time it fails is when the issue is on Apple's side or the user's ISP is blocking certain ports.
Advanced Fix (15+ minutes): Update iOS or Restore
If network reset didn't work, you're probably on an older iOS version with a bug. Seen this a lot on iOS 16.0 and 17.1 releases.
Pro tip: If you're restoring, use a wired connection — Wi-Fi restores fail way more often, especially on older hardware.
When to Just Wait
Sometimes — especially right after an iOS release day — Apple's servers get slammed. The App Store will show "Waiting" for hours. I've seen this happen with iOS 17.0.3 and iOS 18.0 launches. In that case, no fix works. Give it 24 hours.
One more thing: if you're on a corporate or school Wi-Fi network (like eduroam), those often block App Store downloads. Switch to cellular data or a home network to confirm.
