1. The Printer or Shared Drive Isn't Actually Turned On or Connected to the Network
I know this sounds painfully obvious, but I can't tell you how many times I've driven across town to find a client's HP LaserJet sitting in standby mode, or a shared USB drive that got unplugged by the cleaning crew. The error 0X0000083B is Windows's way of saying "I can't see the device anymore." Before you dig into settings, check the hardware.
Here's what to do first:
- Look at the printer or external drive. Is it powered on? No blinking amber lights? If it's a printer, see if it's displaying an error message like "Paper Jam" or "Offline."
- If it's a network share (like a folder on another PC), make sure that PC is turned on and awake. Had a client last month whose whole office file share stopped working because somebody disabled the power settings on the host machine.

- Turn on SMB 1.0 support – Only do this if you're sure the device needs it. Open Control Panel, go to Programs and Features, click Turn Windows features on or off. Scroll down and check SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support. Expand it and also check SMB 1.0/CIFS Client. Click OK and restart.
- If that feels too risky (and it's a fair concern), update the device's firmware instead. Check the manufacturer's support page. Many older devices got patches to support SMB 2.0 or 3.0. - As a last resort, map the drive using the IP address instead of the hostname. Open File Explorer, right-click This PC, select Map network drive, and enter

3. Network Discovery or Credential Cache Got Corrupted
This cause is sneaky because everything looks fine—the device is on, the cables are snug, SMB is set up—but Windows still won't connect. The problem is usually a corrupted credential cache or a network discovery setting that flipped off during a Windows update.
Here's the fix sequence I use:
Step 1: Clear Stored Credentials
Windows remembers old usernames and passwords for network shares. If those are stale or wrong, you'll get 0X0000083B even though the device is perfectly fine.
- Open Control Panel > Credential Manager.
- Click Windows Credentials.
- Look for any entries related to the printer or network share. If you see them, click the arrow and select Remove.
- Restart your PC and try connecting again. Windows will prompt you for new credentials if needed.
Step 2: Turn On Network Discovery
- Open Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings (or in older versions, Network and Sharing Center).
- Click Network and Sharing Center (if not visible, search for it).
- Click Change advanced sharing settings.
- For your current profile (usually Private), turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing.
- Make sure Turn off password protected sharing is selected—unless you want to enter a username every time. I usually leave it off for small offices.
Step 3: Reset the TCP/IP Stack (Nuclear Option)
