Browser Camera Blocked? Fix It in 5 Minutes
Your browser won't let websites use your camera or mic. This usually happens after a malware scan or browser update. Here's how to fix it.
When This Happens
You're on a Zoom call or trying to record a video in your browser. The site asks for camera and mic access. You click "Allow." But nothing happens. Or you get a message that says "Camera blocked" or "Microphone not available." This is especially common after you run a virus scan or update your browser to Chrome 117 or later.
Why It's Blocked
The real culprit is usually a permission reset. Malware scanners sometimes delete browser settings they think are dangerous. Also, browser updates can change how permissions work. For example, Chrome now blocks camera and mic by default for sites you didn't visit before. Firefox and Edge do similar things. The fix is simple: you need to check your browser's permission settings for that specific site.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps. They work for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
For Chrome (Version 117+)
- Go to the site that needs your camera or mic.
- Click the lock icon (or the "Not secure" text) in the address bar, left of the URL.
- In the dropdown, click "Site settings."
- Find "Camera" and "Microphone." Change both from "Block" to "Allow."
- Reload the page (press F5).
chrome://settings/content/camera
chrome://settings/content/microphone
If you don't see the lock icon, type chrome://settings/content/camera in the address bar. Then remove the blocked site from the list.
For Firefox
- Open Firefox. Click the three horizontal lines (menu) in the top right.
- Select "Settings" then "Privacy & Security."
- Scroll down to "Permissions." Click "Settings" next to "Camera" or "Microphone."
- Find the blocked site. Select it and click "Remove Site" or "Allow."
- Close the settings and reload the page.
For Edge
- Go to the site that's blocked.
- Click the lock icon in the address bar.
- Choose "Permissions for this site."
- Set both "Camera" and "Microphone" to "Allow."
- Reload.
If It Still Doesn't Work
Three things to check:
- Hardware switch: Some laptops have a physical switch or button (like F10) that turns off the camera. Check your keyboard for a camera icon.
- Windows privacy settings: Press Windows key + I, go to "Privacy & security," then "Camera" and "Microphone." Make sure "Let apps access your camera" is turned on.
- Antivirus: Some antivirus programs (like Norton or McAfee) block webcams. Open your antivirus and look for "Webcam protection" or "Privacy shield." Disable it temporarily to test.
One more thing: if you use a USB camera, unplug it and plug it back in. Windows sometimes loses the driver after an update. Restarting your computer also helps — it's boring but it works.
That's it. You should be able to use your camera and mic now. If not, let me know in the comments what browser and error you see. I'll help you out.
