1. Your VPN or DNS is blocking the connection
This is the #1 cause I see in the wild. Clients install a free VPN app (or their work profile forces one), and suddenly the App Store can’t reach Apple’s servers. The App Store is picky about DNS and proxy settings.
The fix: Turn off your VPN completely. Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and toggle VPN to Off. If you use a DNS filter like AdGuard or NextDNS, try disabling it temporarily.
Still stuck? Switch to Google DNS. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the blue (i) next to your network, scroll to Configure DNS, set it to Manual, and add 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Had a client last month whose entire office couldn’t update apps – it was a misconfigured Pi-hole DNS on the network.
2. A stale Apple ID authentication session
Sometimes your iPhone’s local token for the App Store gets corrupted. It’s not a password problem – it’s a handshake issue between your device and Apple’s servers. This happens after a failed update or a network blip during an app install.
The fix: Sign out of the App Store and sign back in. Go to Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases (or iTunes & App Store on older iOS). Tap Sign Out. Wait 10 seconds, then sign back in with your Apple ID password. Don’t use Face ID or Touch ID here – type the password manually to force a fresh token.
If that doesn’t work, restart your phone after signing out. I’ve seen this fix work on iPhone 12s through iPhone 15s running iOS 16 and 17.
3. Corrupted network settings (last resort)
If neither of the above worked, your device’s network configuration is likely messed up. This can happen after a carrier settings update, a failed Wi-Fi handoff, or a buggy iOS beta. Resetting network settings wipes saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings, but it won’t erase your data.
The fix: Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Your phone will reboot. Then reconnect to Wi-Fi and test the App Store. I’ve had cases where this was the only fix – especially after an iOS update that borked the DNS cache.
Pro tip: Before resetting, screenshot your Wi-Fi passwords if you don’t remember them. You’ll need to re-enter them manually.
Quick-Reference Summary Table
| Cause | What to do | Takes about |
|---|---|---|
| VPN or DNS block | Turn off VPN, switch DNS to 8.8.8.8 | 2 minutes |
| Stale Apple ID token | Sign out of Media & Purchases, sign back in | 1 minute |
| Corrupted network settings | Reset Network Settings from Settings | 3 minutes + reboot |
Try these in order. 9 times out of 10, the VPN or DNS fix is all you need. Skip the “turn airplane mode on and off” stuff – it rarely works for this error.
