Duplex printing module not responding on HP LaserJet Pro M404dn

This error hits when you try printing double-sided but the printer says the duplex module is dead. The real cause is usually a stuck flap or a loose cable inside.

You're printing a double-sided document on an HP LaserJet Pro M404dn (or similar model like the M402 or MFP M427). The first side prints fine. Then the paper gets pulled back in, and the printer throws you a message: Duplex printing module not responding. The printer stops, blinks an orange light, and you're stuck with one-sided prints. This happens most often after a paper jam where you yanked the paper out without opening the rear access door.

What's Actually Happening Here

The duplex module isn't a separate computer – it's a mechanical diverter. There's a plastic flap that flips up and down to route paper either out to the output tray or back into the printer for the second side. On the M404dn, this flap is driven by a small gear train. When you pull paper out the wrong way, that gear can skip a tooth or the flap can get bent slightly. The printer's sensor expects the flap to be in a specific position. If it's not, the printer thinks the module is dead.

The other common cause is a loose ribbon cable inside. That cable connects the duplex sensor board to the main logic board. If it's not fully seated, the sensor readings get garbled and you get the error.

This is NOT a driver issue. Don't waste time reinstalling drivers or replacing the duplex unit – the mechanical fix is simpler and costs nothing.

The Fix – Step by Step

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it. Wait 60 seconds for the capacitors to discharge. You don't want to short anything when touching the parts.
  2. Open the rear access door. That's the back panel that flips down. On the M404dn, it's held by two plastic tabs. Pull the top edge toward you and it'll drop open.
  3. Look for a small black plastic flap inside, near the middle. It's about one inch wide and points upward at a 45-degree angle. This is the duplex diverter. Gently push it upward with your finger – it should move freely and spring back. If it feels stuck or doesn't return to its original position, it's misaligned. Use a small flathead screwdriver to nudge it back into place. The flap should sit flush against the metal frame when fully up.
  4. While you're back there, check the ribbon cable. It's a flat grey cable about two inches wide, running from the left side of the duplex bay to the main board. Pull it gently – if it slides out even 1mm, it's loose. Push it back in until you feel a click. Make sure the locking tab on the connector is closed.
  5. Close the rear door. Push it until you hear two clicks. That means both tabs are engaged.
  6. Plug the printer back in and turn it on. Run a duplex test print: go to the printer's control panel, press Setup > Reports > Configuration Page. That page prints on one side. Then try printing a two-page document from your computer with duplex selected. If it works, you're done.
  7. If the error returns, repeat step 3 but more aggressively. Sometimes the flap needs to be cycled manually by rotating the gear behind it. You'll see a white plastic gear next to the flap. Use a screwdriver to turn it clockwise about half a turn. This resets the gear train position. Then test again.

What to Check if It Still Fails

If the above doesn't fix it, the problem is deeper. Two things to look at:

  • The duplex solenoid. On the left side inside the printer (behind the toner cartridge area) there's a small black solenoid that controls the flap. If it's stuck closed, the flap never moves. Tap it gently with a screwdriver handle while the printer is trying to duplex – if the flap suddenly works, the solenoid is sticking. You can replace it for about $15, but the easier fix is to clean its plunger with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab.
  • A broken gear tooth. Remove the duplex unit entirely (two screws on the back, slide it out). Spin the large gear by hand – if you feel a skip or see a missing tooth, the gear needs replacing. HP part number RM1-1247-000CN works for M404 and M402 models. Order it and swap it out.

One last thing: make sure you're not using paper that's too thick for duplex. The M404dn officially supports 16 to 28 lb bond paper for double-sided printing. Heavier paper (like 32 lb) can jam in the duplex path because it's too stiff to curve back around. If you're using 24 lb paper and the error persists after the mechanical fix, the paper quality might be the issue – try a different ream.
