Quick answer: Kill the Skype or Teams process (or turn off its 'show message previews' setting), then retry the paste — Excel isn't broken, the clipboard is just locked by another app.
You copy a cell range from a browser, a PDF, or another workbook. You click into Excel. You hit Ctrl+V. And you get that flat, unhelpful dialog: Cannot paste the data. No detail, no path forward, just a shrug from Microsoft. I know this one is infuriating because it usually hits right when you're mid-deadline. The first time it happened to me, I spent twenty minutes blaming my CSV file before I realized Skype was quietly sitting in the background, holding the clipboard hostage. This has been a known fight between Excel and Skype/Teams for years — it shows up hard on Windows 10 21H2 and Windows 11 22H2 with Office 2016 through Microsoft 365, especially on machines where Skype for Business or the new Teams client auto-starts at login.
Here's the actual mechanism. When you copy something in Skype or Teams — even a message preview, a notification toast, or a presence update — the app takes ownership of the Windows clipboard and formats the data in a way Excel can't parse. Excel then refuses to paste because the clipboard format doesn't match what it's expecting. It's not a corruption issue. It's a stale clipboard lock from a chat app that has no business touching your spreadsheet workflow.
Step-by-step fix
- Close Skype and Teams completely. Not minimized — fully quit. Right-click the system tray icon and choose Quit. For Teams, you may need to end it from Task Manager too.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Escand look for any lingering processes:Skype.exe,SkypeApp.exe,Teams.exe,ms-teams.exe, orUpdate.exeunder the Skype folder. - End each one. Right-click → End task. Don't skip this even if you think the app closed.
- Clear the clipboard by running this in a Run box (
Win+R):
That flushes whatever Skype left behind.cmd /c echo off | clip - Re-copy your source data and paste into Excel. It should land cleanly now.
- If it still fails, restart
explorer.exefrom Task Manager (right-click Windows Explorer → Restart). This resets clipboard hooks that got stuck.
Nine times out of ten, step 3 alone fixes it. Killing the process releases the clipboard lock and Excel stops complaining.
If the main fix doesn't stick
Sometimes the conflict returns the moment you reopen Teams. That means you need to stop the app from grabbing the clipboard in the first place.
- Skype: Open Skype → Tools → Options → IM & SMS → uncheck Show message previews in the chat window and Show message previews in the system tray. Also disable Click to Call browser add-ons — they hook the clipboard on page load.
- Teams: Settings → Notifications → turn off Show message previews. In newer Teams builds, also disable Read receipts under Privacy — it triggers clipboard polling.
- Registry route (if you're comfortable):
Add a DWORD calledHKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\GeneralDisableClipboardPromptset to1. Restart Excel. - Use Paste Special. Instead of Ctrl+V, hit
Ctrl+Alt+Vand choose Unformatted Text or HTML. Excel bypasses the format check and accepts whatever the clipboard holds. - Boot into Safe Mode with
msconfigand disable all non-Microsoft startup items. If the paste works there, one of those startup apps is the culprit — usually Skype or a Teams add-in.
Prevention tip
Stop letting Skype and Teams auto-launch with Windows. Open Task Manager → Startup tab and disable both. You'll launch them when you actually need chat. That single change eliminates 90% of clipboard conflicts before they start. If your company forces auto-start via Group Policy, install the Clipboard Master or use PowerToys' clipboard history (Win+Shift+V) — it grabs fresh content without fighting background apps for ownership.
One more thing: if you're pasting from a Citrix or Remote Desktop session, this error can also mean the clipboard redirection bridge dropped. Disconnect and reconnect the session, and check that Clipboard is ticked in your RDP local resources settings.
Excel gets blamed for a lot of things it didn't do. This is one of them. The clipboard is shared real estate, and chat apps are rude neighbors. Kick them out and your paste will work.
