Fix MODEM Error 0xC00A0008 on Windows 10/11 Fast

Windows Errors Beginner 👁 1 views 📅 May 27, 2026

This error usually pops up when Windows can't access your camera or mic because another app grabbed it first. Here's how to kick that app loose and get back to your Zoom or Teams call.

1. Another app is using the camera or microphone (most common)

You'll see this error when you're on a Zoom call and try to open the Camera app at the same time. Or when Teams is running in the background and you try to start a Skype call. Windows can only let one app grab the camera and mic at a time. The second app gets kicked with 0xC00A0008.

What to do:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Look at the list under Apps. Find anything that uses a camera: Zoom, Teams, Skype, Discord, Slack, Chrome (if it's on a video call), or the built-in Windows Camera app.
  3. Click on that app once to select it.
  4. Click the End task button in the bottom-right corner.
  5. After you end it, close Task Manager.
  6. Open the app that gave you the error again. Wait 5 seconds — the camera should work now.

If you don't see the app in Task Manager, click the arrow next to Background processes at the bottom of the list. Some apps, like Teams, hide there even when you think you've closed them.

This fixes about 80% of 0xC00A0008 errors in my experience. If it didn't work for you, move to the next step.

2. Windows privacy settings are blocking camera access

Starting with Windows 10 version 1803, Microsoft added a per-app camera toggle inside Settings. If that toggle is off for the app you're using, Windows throws 0xC00A0008 even if another app isn't running.

Step-by-step fix:

  1. Click the Start button and click the gear icon (Settings).
  2. Click Privacy & security (Windows 11) or Privacy (Windows 10).
  3. Click Camera in the left sidebar. You'll see a list of apps under Allow apps to access your camera.
  4. Make sure the master toggle Camera access is turned On. If it's Off, no app can use the camera.
  5. Scroll down to the list of apps. Find the one that gave you the error (like Skype, Teams, or Zoom). Its toggle must also be On.
  6. Repeat the same steps for Microphone under Privacy & security. Turn on the master mic toggle and the toggle for your app.
  7. Close Settings. Open your app again and test the camera.

Expected outcome: After you toggle both camera and mic to On, the app should load the camera without the error. If it still says 0xC00A0008, close the app, reopen it, and try again.

3. The camera driver is corrupted or outdated

Sometimes a Windows Update or a driver update from Dell, HP, or Lenovo messes up the camera driver. The error 0xC00A0008 can pop up any time you try to open the camera, even when no other app is running and privacy settings are correct.

Fix: Uninstall and reinstall the driver

  1. Press Windows + X and choose Device Manager.
  2. Find and expand Cameras. You'll see something like Integrated Webcam, USB Video Device, or your laptop model's camera name.
  3. Right-click the camera name and choose Uninstall device.
  4. A popup will ask Delete the driver software for this device. Check that box. Then click Uninstall.
  5. Restart your computer. Windows will automatically reinstall the generic camera driver on boot.
  6. After the restart, open Device Manager again. Under Cameras, you should see the camera listed again. Right-click it and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers. If Windows finds a newer version, it installs it. Done.

Alternative if the above doesn't work: Go to your laptop manufacturer's support site (Dell, Lenovo, HP, ASUS). Download and install the latest camera driver manually. Don't use Windows Update for this — OEM drivers are often newer and more stable.

After reinstalling the driver, test the camera in any app. 0xC00A0008 should be gone.

Quick-reference summary

Cause Fix Time needed
Another app using the camera/mic End that app in Task Manager 30 seconds
Privacy settings blocking access Turn on camera and mic toggles in Settings 2 minutes
Corrupted or outdated camera driver Uninstall and reinstall the driver in Device Manager 5 minutes

Start with cause #1. It's the quickest and the most common. If you've tried all three and still see 0xC00A0008, the issue might be a hardware failure — your camera cable might be loose inside the laptop, or the camera itself died. In that case, contact your PC maker's support.
