You're in the middle of a game, things are heating up, and suddenly—black screen. Then a little popup in the bottom-right corner: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered." Game's gone. You're back at the desktop, wondering if your GPU is toast.

I've seen this hundreds of times. It's almost never a dead graphics card. What it is: a Windows feature called TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery). Windows decides your GPU took too long to respond, so it kills the driver and restarts it. The fix depends on why the GPU stalled.

Let's go through the most common causes, in order of likelihood. Skip the generic advice about updating drivers—you need to know exactly what's happening first.

1. Overclocking or Factory Overclock is Too Aggressive

This is the #1 cause, especially with newer cards. Had a client last month with a brand-new RTX 4070 Ti Super. Every 20 minutes in Cyberpunk 2077, the driver would crash. He'd spent a week swapping power supplies and reinstalling Windows. The fix? Dialing back the memory clock by 200 MHz in MSI Afterburner.

Factory overclocks are tested, but not for your specific silicon lottery. Games push the GPU harder than any benchmark. One bad memory chip and the driver bails.

3. Power Supply Issues

This one's trickier. A failing or underpowered power supply can cause voltage dips that make the GPU crash. The driver doesn't get enough juice, it stalls, Windows TDR kicks in.

  • You hear the PSU fan struggling or coil whine
  • Other components (like the USB ports) also glitch out

Check your PSU's wattage vs. your GPU's requirements. A RTX 3080 needs at least a 750W, and that's with a quality unit. Cheap 650W units can't handle transient spikes. I've replaced a dozen budget PSUs with EVGA or Seasonic units and solved the problem instantly.
