I know this error is infuriating — the printer was fine five minutes ago, and now it's frozen mid-job with a code that means nothing to anyone. 49.4C02 usually shows up on HP LaserJet Pro and MFP machines (M426, M428, M479, M527, and the MFP M4xx line especially) right after someone sends a large PDF or a print job from a phone. The firmware hits a memory or parsing fault it can't recover from, panics, and throws the 49 service error. The 4C02 sub-code points at a corrupt data stream — the printer tried to render something malformed and the controller gave up.

What makes this annoying is that it looks like a hardware failure but usually isn't. Nine times out of ten the printer is fine. The job that killed it is still sitting in the queue, and every time the printer reboots it tries to process that same job and crashes again. That loop is the real problem.

Before you do anything: how to force a reboot

If the printer is unresponsive, hold the power button for 10–15 seconds. Unplug the power cord from the wall (not just the printer side) and wait a full 60 seconds. Plug it back into a wall outlet, not a surge strip or UPS. Those can deliver marginal voltage and trip a 49 error on their own.

Step-by-step fix for 49.4C02

  1. Clear the print queue on every connected computer. This is the step people skip, and it's why the error comes straight back. On Windows: open Services (services.msc), stop Print Spooler, then delete everything in C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS, then restart the spooler. On macOS: open System Settings > Printers & Scanners, select the HP, click Print Queue, and remove all jobs.
  2. Power cycle the printer cold. Turn it off, unplug it, wait 60 seconds, plug into a wall outlet, and power on. Don't touch anything during boot — the self-test needs to complete.
  3. Print the internal config page. On most LaserJets: tap the gear icon on the front panel, go to Reports, then Configuration Report. If it prints clean, the firmware is healthy and the bad job was the culprit.

If the error returns within minutes

  • Update the print driver. Grab the HP Universal Print Driver (PCL 6) for your OS. The PCL 5 driver is more forgiving but loses features.

  • Replace the formatter. If reseating doesn't help and firmware is current, the formatter is failing. HP formatter kits for the M426/M427 run around $120–$180. If the printer is over 6 years old, put that money toward a new unit.

What actually triggers 49.4C02

In my experience the top three triggers are:

  1. A print job sent from a mobile phone via HP Smart or AirPrint while a desktop job is already rendering. The two streams collide in memory and the firmware faults.
  2. Printing a large PDF or a document with complex vector graphics from Adobe Reader. Reader's postscript output has caused 49 errors on HP firmware for years.
  3. Firmware that's two or more revisions behind. HP quietly fixed a pile of 49.4C02 reports in the 2023 firmware releases, and a lot of machines out there never got the update because automatic updates were turned off.

Prevention

Turn on automatic firmware updates in the Embedded Web Server (type the printer's IP into a browser, log in, go to General > Firmware Update). Set it to auto-install. Also, don't send print jobs from three devices at once — that's the scenario that drops most LaserJets into 49 errors. And if you're on a Windows network, ditch the IPP class driver for the full HP driver. It's the least glamorous fix on this list and the one that stops the error from ever coming back.

One more thing: if you see 49.4C02 alongside a paper jam or a fuser error, fix the physical fault first. The 49 code can be a secondary symptom when the printer hits a hard stop mid-render.
