Why your alarm only buzzes after the iOS 17 update

You set an alarm, the phone vibrates on your nightstand, but no sound comes out. What's actually happening here is that iOS 17 changed how the system routes alarm audio when 'Play Haptics in Silent Mode' is enabled. In previous versions, the Clock app's alarm sound was exempt from the silent switch. After 17.0, that exemption got tangled with the haptics preference. If the toggle is on and your ringer switch is flipped to silent, the alarm can lose its audio channel and fall back to haptics only. Apple patched part of this in 17.1, but the behavior persists for a lot of people on 17.0–17.2 depending on device and restore history.

This isn't a hardware fault. Your speaker is fine. The phone is doing exactly what the software told it to do — which is the wrong thing.

Fix 1: The 30-second toggle dance

Try this first. It clears the stuck audio route without touching any settings you care about.

1. Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics.
2. Scroll to the bottom and find Play Haptics in Silent Mode.
3. If it's on, turn it off. If it's off, turn it on. Wait five seconds.
4. Toggle it back to your preferred state.
5. Lock the phone and trigger the alarm with a test alarm set for one minute out.

The reason step 3 works is that the toggle forces the audio session to rebuild its routing table. iOS caches the alarm's audio session category, and that cache can go stale after an OTA update. Flipping the toggle invalidates it.

If the alarm rings after this, stop here. You're done. If it doesn't, the cache isn't the problem — the media services daemon is.

Fix 2: Reset the ringer switch and check Focus

Five minutes, and this catches the second most common cause: a Focus mode silently killing the alarm audio.

1. Flip the physical ringer switch on the left side of the phone. If you're on an iPhone 15 Pro, that's the Action Button — press and hold it and confirm the Silent mode indicator in Control Center actually changes.
2. Swipe down Control Center and look at the bell icon. If it's crossed out, silent is on. That's expected. But with the haptics toggle on, silent mode shouldn't kill alarm audio — and after iOS 17, sometimes it does.
3. Open Settings → Focus. Check every mode: Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Personal, Work.
4. Inside each mode, tap Apps or People and look for Time Sensitive notifications. Alarms should bypass Focus entirely, but the Clock app's alarm is treated as Time Sensitive. If Time Sensitive is off for a Focus that's active, the alarm gets muted.

Turn Time Sensitive back on for any active Focus. The Sleep focus in particular got reset to defaults for a lot of people during the 17.0 update — Apple changed the Focus schema and the migration didn't always carry over the alarm exception.

Fix 3: The 15-minute reset that actually sticks

If both of the above fail, the audio session database is corrupted. This is where most people give up and assume the speaker died. It hasn't. You need to flush the media services cache and rebuild the alarm entries.

Step A: Delete and recreate every alarm

Don't just edit them. Delete them.

1. Open Clock → Alarm.
2. Swipe left on each alarm and tap Delete. All of them.
3. Force-quit the Clock app: swipe up from the bottom, hold, then swipe the Clock card away.
4. Reboot the phone. Hold volume-up and side button until the Apple logo appears.
5. Recreate one alarm with a sound that isn't the default 'Radar'. Pick 'Ripple' or 'Opening'.

The reason a non-default sound matters: 'Radar' is the one sound iOS 17's audio glitch hits hardest, because it's stored as a haptic-synced audio file. If the haptics subsystem is confused, Radar goes silent first. Any other ringtone routes through a different audio path and often just works.

Step B: Reset all settings (nuclear but safe)

Only do this if Step A didn't fix it. This won't erase your data, photos, or apps — it wipes Wi-Fi passwords, wallpapers, and preferences. Annoying but recoverable.

Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings

After the reset, go back to Sounds & Haptics and set the haptics toggle to off if you want alarm audio to be bulletproof. Yes, that means no vibration in silent mode for other alerts. Trade-off. The alternative is living with an alarm that might not wake you.

What Apple actually changed and whether 17.3 fixes it

iOS 17.3 shipped a fix for the alarm audio session in January 2024, but it only applies to devices that were updated fresh — not restored from an iCloud backup made on 17.0 or 17.1. The corrupt audio session preference travels in the backup. That's why two people with the same iPhone 15 on the same iOS version get different results.

If you're stuck on 17.2 or earlier and can't update, the reliable workaround is to set a second alarm using a third-party app like Sleep Cycle or Alarmy. Those apps use their own audio session category and don't inherit the Clock app's messed-up routing. It's not elegant, but it wakes you up.

Quick reference table

One more thing worth checking if nothing above helps: make sure a Bluetooth speaker or AirPods aren't connected and grabbing the audio route. iOS 17 has a bug where a paired-but-disconnected Bluetooth device still claims the alarm's audio channel. Forget the device in Bluetooth settings and test again.
