iPhone Hotspot Missing After iOS 17 Update — Real Fixes

You updated to iOS 17, and now your iPhone's Personal Hotspot has vanished from every other device's Wi-Fi list. The toggle is on, it says "Personal Hotspot", but nothing sees it. Annoying as hell when you're on a train with a laptop and no other option.

I've dealt with this on iPhone 12s through 15 Pros. The fix is almost never a full restore. Here's what actually works, in order of how often it's the culprit.

Cause 1: The 'Maximize Compatibility' toggle is off (most common)

This is the number one thing I see. Apple quietly changed the hotspot radio mode in iOS 17. On Wi-Fi 6E capable iPhones (12 and newer), the hotspot now broadcasts on 6GHz by default. Older laptops, Android phones, some tablets, hotel smart TVs — they can't see 6GHz networks at all. The hotspot isn't broken, it's just invisible to your client device.

The fix is buried in Settings and it's not obvious.

1. Open Settings
2. Tap Personal Hotspot
3. Flip on Maximize Compatibility

That forces the hotspot back to 2.4GHz. Slower, yes, but your 2018 MacBook Air will actually see it. I keep this on permanently on my travel phone because the speed difference rarely matters for email and Slack.

If you don't see the Maximize Compatibility switch at all, your iPhone doesn't support 6GHz hotspot — skip to cause 2. Only iPhone 12 and newer on iOS 17 show it.

Cause 2: Stale carrier bundle after the update

iOS 17 shipped with a pile of carrier settings changes. If your carrier bundle didn't refresh (common on MVNOs like Mint, Visible, US Mobile, and regional carriers), the hotspot APN gets left in a weird state. The toggle appears on but the phone refuses to hand out an IP to clients.

Check for a carrier update manually:

Settings → General → About
Wait 15 seconds on this screen.

If a carrier update is pending, a dialog pops up. Tap Update. This pushes new APN values, and hotspot usually starts broadcasting again within a minute. On my last Visible SIM this alone fixed it after two days of cursing.

If nothing pops up, force it through iTunes/Finder on a Mac or PC. Plug the iPhone in, open Finder (macOS Catalina+) or iTunes (Windows), click the device, and hit Check for Update. That path sometimes triggers carrier bundles the on-device check misses.

Bonus: verify the APN if you're on an MVNO

Some MVNOs push a bad APN after iOS 17. If hotspot still won't hand out addresses, check:

Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Network → Personal Hotspot
APN: (whatever your carrier specifies)
Username: (usually blank)
Password: (usually blank)

If that menu doesn't exist on your carrier, you can't edit it — call support and ask them to re-provision the hotspot SOC on your line. Nine times out of ten that's a backend flag, not something you can fix on the phone.

Cause 3: Wi-Fi/Bluetooth state got corrupted during the OTA

This one's rarer but real, especially after a jump from iOS 16.x straight to 17.0. The OTA doesn't always rebuild the wireless config cleanly. Symptoms: hotspot works on USB tethering but not Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth pairing drops halfway through.

Don't bother with toggling Airplane Mode — it rarely helps here. Do this instead, in this order:

1. Sign out of iCloud (Settings → [your name] → Sign Out). Yes, really. The hotspot is tied to your Apple ID's Instant Hotspot handoff, and a stale token breaks discovery.
2. Restart the iPhone.
3. Sign back into iCloud.
4. Toggle Personal Hotspot off, wait 10 seconds, toggle it on.

If that doesn't do it, Reset Network Settings (Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings). You'll lose saved Wi-Fi passwords. That's the cost. It clears the corrupted wireless state without nuking your data.

Do NOT do a full Erase All Content and Settings unless you've exhausted everything else. It almost never fixes hotspot issues and you'll spend three hours restoring.

One more thing: Family Sharing gotcha

If the device that can't see your hotspot is another iPhone or iPad on your Family Sharing group, check Settings → Personal Hotspot → Family Sharing → set to Family Sharing or Ask For Approval. After iOS 17, some people found this reset to "Off" silently, which hides the hotspot from family devices entirely. Not a bug per se, but it looks like one.

Quick reference

Start with Maximize Compatibility. It solves roughly 70% of the iOS 17 hotspot complaints I've seen. If that doesn't do it, the carrier bundle is next. The iCloud sign-out dance is last resort before you call your carrier and ask them to check the hotspot provisioning on your account.
