You tap “Download and Install” for the latest iOS, and everything looks fine for a while. Then the screen goes black and shows a progress bar with the words “Verifying Update…” underneath. And there it sits. Five minutes pass, ten minutes, sometimes an hour. The bar barely moves, or it moves but never finishes. This usually happens right after the download completes, during the verification phase, and it's most common on older models like the iPhone X or 11 when you're on a slow Wi-Fi connection or low on storage. I've also seen it trigger when you're updating over a VPN or a corporate network that intercepts HTTPS traffic.
What's actually happening here
The verification step checks the cryptographic signature of the downloaded IPSW file. iOS contacts Apple's servers, compares the hash, and makes sure the update hasn't been tampered with. That's a normal process. The problem is that this check can hang indefinitely if the network connection to Apple is flaky or if the update file got corrupted during download. Your iPhone isn't frozen — it's waiting on a network response that never comes cleanly. And because the verification process doesn't have a built-in timeout, it'll wait forever unless you intervene.
The fix: force restart
A force restart interrupts the verification process and reboots the phone cleanly. It doesn't wipe any data, but it kills the stuck process and lets you start the update again. Here's how to do it for each model:
- iPhone 8 or later (including X, 11, 12, 13, 14): Press and quickly release the Volume Up button, then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Now press and hold the Side button (the power button) until you see the Apple logo. This takes about 10 seconds. Keep holding even if a “slide to power off” slider appears — ignore it.
- iPhone 7 / 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Side button and the Volume Down button simultaneously. Keep holding until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 6s or earlier: Press and hold both the Home button and the Side (or top) button together. Release when you see the Apple logo.
Once your phone boots back up, you'll likely land on the home screen, and the update will not have been installed. That's fine. Go to Settings → General → Software Update and try again. But before you do, make sure you've got the basics covered:
- Storage: Check Settings → General → iPhone Storage. You need at least double the size of the update free. iOS 17 is around 1.5 GB, so aim for 3 GB free. If you're low, delete a few apps or videos first.
- Wi-Fi: Turn off VPN and any proxy settings. Go to Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and toggle off any active VPN. Then forget your current Wi-Fi network and rejoin it, or connect to a different network if you can.
- Power: Plug your iPhone into a charger. Some updates fail if the battery drops below 50% mid-install.
If it still fails
Sometimes a force restart isn't enough, and the verification hangs again on the second attempt. The reason is usually a corrupted update file still sitting in your storage. iOS doesn't always clear it after a failed verification. What you want to do is delete the partial download and start fresh.
Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage, scroll down to find the iOS update entry (it's near the bottom), tap it, and select Delete Update. This removes the partial file. Then go back to Software Update and download it again. If you're on a Mac or PC, you can also update via Finder (or iTunes on older systems) with a USB cable — that bypasses the on-device verification entirely, which often fixes stubborn hangs.
When to dig deeper
If you've deleted the update, cleared storage, turned off VPN, and tried again, but it still sticks at “Verifying Update,” the problem might be your network itself. Try updating at a different time of day, or on a completely different Wi-Fi network (like a friend's house or a mobile hotspot — though that'll eat data). I've also seen cases where a router's firewall or content filtering blocks Apple's verification servers. In that case, resetting your router to factory defaults or updating its firmware does the trick.
One more thing: if your phone is older than the iPhone 8 and the update is iOS 16 or later, you might be hitting a hardware limitation. But that's rare — the verification hang is almost always a network or storage issue, not a hardware one.
Pro tip: If you're short on time, plug your phone into a computer and update through Finder. It's faster and more reliable than over-the-air updates, and it gives you better error messages if something goes wrong.
