Monitor Flickering Black? Fix It in 6 Steps

Monitor randomly goes black for a second or two? Happens most on DisplayPort connections. Here's the fix that actually works.

You're mid-email, maybe typing a password, and the screen just blinks out. Black. One second later it's back, like nothing happened. It's not a full crash—your PC keeps humming along. Happens again ten minutes later. Then again. If you're on a desktop with a DisplayPort cable, I'd bet money on the trigger: the monitor enters a low-power state, loses signal for a moment, and wakes up confused.

I've seen this exact thing at small offices and home setups more times than I can count. A client last month had his whole team convinced their GPUs were dying. Turned out every single one of them was plugged into the same batch of cheap DisplayPort cables that couldn't handle the GPU's power management handshake.

The root cause is almost always one of three things: a marginal cable, a power-saving setting that's too aggressive, or a refresh rate the cable can't actually carry. Most people chase drivers or reinstall Windows—don't do that. Start with the physical stuff.

What Actually Causes the Black Flicker

Modern GPUs and monitors talk constantly over the cable. When your screen is static, the GPU drops the signal to save power (that's the "blank" time). When something changes on screen—you move the mouse, a notification pops—the GPU says "wake up" and the monitor should respond instantly. If the cable is weak, has a loose pin, or is too long (over 3 meters for DisplayPort), that wake-up signal gets corrupted. The monitor panics and goes black for a second before resyncing.

HDMI doesn't have this problem as often because it's a simpler handshake. That's why you might only see flicker on DisplayPort.

The 6-Step Fix That Works

  1. Try a different cable first. Not just any cable—get a VESA-certified DisplayPort cable under 2 meters. The $8 no-name ones are the #1 culprit. If you've got a spare HDMI cable around, plug that in as a test. If flicker stops, it was the cable. Order a quality one.
  2. Change the refresh rate. Right-click your desktop and go to Display settings > Advanced display settings. If your monitor is set to 144Hz or 240Hz, drop it to 120Hz or 60Hz temporarily. A cable that can't handle the bandwidth will flicker at high refresh rates, especially during idle. If the flicker disappears at 60Hz, you need a better cable (or a shorter one).
  3. Kill the aggressive power saving. On the monitor itself, go into its on-screen menu (the buttons on the bezel). Look for "Power Saving," "Eco Mode," or "DPMS." Turn it off or set it to minimum. These modes are the main trigger for the black-sleep-resync loop. I've seen monitors with a "DPMS" setting that was basically broken—disabling it fixed everything.
  4. Disable the GPU's power management. In Windows, open the Control Panel (not the Settings app), go to Power Options, then "Change plan settings" for your active plan, then "Change advanced power settings." Scroll to PCI Express, expand "Link State Power Management," and set it to "Off." This stops Windows from cutting power to the GPU's link when the screen is idle.
  5. Check the physical connection. Unplug both ends of the cable. Blow out any dust. Reseat firmly—you want a click. A loosely seated DisplayPort cable (they don't have screws) can cause intermittent flicker from slight movement or thermal expansion after the room warms up.
  6. Update your GPU driver—but only as a last resort. Bad drivers have caused flicker, but they're rarely the culprit when the issue is intermittent and tied to idle time. If you've done steps 1-5 and still get flicker, then yeah, grab the latest driver from Nvidia or AMD. But I've fixed a hundred of these cases and only maybe five were driver-related.

Still Flickering? Do These Two Things

If you've gone through all six steps and the screen still blacks out, you're looking at a hardware fault. Test the monitor on a different PC. If it flickers there too, the monitor's internal panel or main board is dying—time for a replacement. If it doesn't flicker on the other PC, your GPU might be failing. Stress-test it with something like FurMark or OCCT. A GPU that's overheating or has bad VRAM can cause signal drops that look exactly like cable issues.

One more thing: if you're using a docking station or a KVM switch, bypass it. Plug the monitor directly into the GPU. I had a client whose whole office flickered because their cheap KVM switches couldn't handle the resolution. Direct connection solved it in five minutes.

That's the practical fix path. Start with the cable, then the power settings, and you'll kill this problem before it wastes a whole afternoon.
