Yeah, I know. The screen's flickering and it's making you nuts. But before you RMA that monitor, do this one thing — it's fixed this exact issue for me more times than I can count.
The Fix: Swap Your Cable and Check Refresh Rate
Unplug your monitor cable. Both ends. Now plug it back in firmly. If the flicker persists, swap the cable entirely — not the monitor. In my 14 years, the culprit is almost always a bad DisplayPort or HDMI cable, especially if you're running a high refresh rate like 144Hz or 240Hz.
Here's the kicker: cheap cables or older versions (HDMI 1.4, DisplayPort 1.2) can't handle the bandwidth for 1440p at 144Hz or 4K at 120Hz. They start dropping packets, and your screen flickers or goes black for a second. If you're using a cable that came with a printer or an old set-top box, throw it out.
Get a VESA-certified DisplayPort 1.4 cable or a high-speed HDMI 2.1 cable. They're cheap — under $15. Don't buy the $60 Monster cable, that's a scam. A decent brand like AmazonBasics or Cable Matters works fine.
After swapping, also lower your refresh rate to test. Right-click the desktop, go to Display settings, then Advanced display settings. Change the refresh rate from 144Hz to 120Hz or 60Hz. Rare, but it happens. Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) in Safe Mode, then install the latest driver from NVIDIA or AMD. Don't skip DDU — it cleans out the old driver properly. Just updating over the top doesn't always work.
3. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) conflicts

- Update your GPU drivers regularly — but don't install beta drivers.
- If you're pushing a high refresh rate, check the OSD's info page to confirm it's actually running at that rate. Sometimes Windows says 144Hz but the monitor is locked at 60Hz.
One last thing — if you've tried all this and the flicker is still there, then yes, it might be the monitor. But I'd bet my morning coffee it's the cable. Try that first, and you'll save yourself a week of back-and-forth with tech support.
