Why your monitor goes black for a couple seconds

What's actually happening here is the display is losing signal from your PC for a brief moment, then renegotiating the connection. It happens because of a failing cable, a flaky power setting, or a graphics driver acting up. The blackout lasts exactly as long as it takes for the monitor and GPU to re-handshake on resolution and refresh rate – typically 1-3 seconds.

I've seen this on HDMI 2.1 cables rated too low for 4K 144Hz, on DisplayPort cables that got bent behind a desk, and on cheap cables that came with the monitor. Also happens when Windows decides to shut off the display and fails to wake it cleanly. Here's the fix order that actually works.
