You're mid-game or deep in a spreadsheet when the screen goes black for a second, then the monitor LED blinks and it says "No Signal" before coming back. Or worse, it stays black and you have to yank the cable. This usually happens on Windows 11 laptops or desktops with an external monitor plugged in via HDMI or DisplayPort. It's most common when the GPU is under load — think gaming or video rendering — or after the machine wakes from sleep.
Why this happens
Nine times out of ten it's one of three things: a flaky cable or connection, a power management setting that's too aggressive, or a graphics driver that's fighting with the monitor's handshake. It's rarely the monitor itself dying.
The handshake is the digital negotiation your GPU and monitor do over the cable to agree on resolution and refresh rate. If that signal gets interrupted — even for a millisecond — the monitor drops out. A cable that's slightly loose or poorly shielded can cause exactly that. And Windows 11's power settings are notorious for cutting power to USB ports or letting the GPU sleep at the wrong moment.
The real fix
Skip the driver reinstall for now. Start with the cheap and easy stuff. I've lost count of how many "broken" monitors were just a half-seated HDMI plug.
- Reseat and swap the cable. Unplug both ends, blow out the ports if you have canned air, and plug it back in firmly. If it still drops, try a different cable — ideally a certified HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 1.4 cable. Cheap cables cause dropouts under load. I've seen a $5 cable cause daily black screens that vanished when we swapped to a quality one.
- Check the port on the monitor and GPU. Try a different physical port on both ends. Monitors often have multiple HDMI inputs, and GPUs have several outputs. A bent pin or damaged port can cause intermittent signal loss. If you're on a laptop that's plugged into a dock, test without the dock too.
- Turn off aggressive power saving. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Set both "On battery power, turn off my screen" and "When plugged in, turn off my screen" to Never temporarily. Also, open the old Control Panel (type "power plan" in Start), click "Change plan settings" for your active plan, then "Change advanced power settings." Look for PCI Express > Link State Power Management and set it to Off. This stops the GPU from cutting its own power link.
- Disable USB selective suspend. In the same advanced power settings window, find USB settings > USB selective suspend setting and disable it. This is a known culprit for monitors that share a hub with USB peripherals.
- Adjust the display refresh rate. Right-click your desktop and pick Display settings, then scroll to Advanced display. If your monitor is set to its maximum refresh rate (like 144Hz or 240Hz), drop it to the next step down (120Hz or 144Hz). Some monitors and cables can't hold the highest rate, especially over long runs.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver. Use Device Manager, find your GPU under "Display adapters," right-click and choose "Update driver." If the drops started right after a driver update, roll back instead. Click "Properties," go to the Driver tab, and hit "Roll Back Driver."
- Turn off the monitor's eco or auto-power feature. Many monitors have a setting like "Auto Power Off" or "Deep Sleep" that can trigger a dropout. Check your monitor's on-screen menu — usually via buttons on the side — and disable any sleep timer while you test.
Still black screening?
If you've done all that and it's still dropping, try a different monitor on the same port. If the new one works, your monitor's firmware might be buggy. Check the manufacturer's support page for a firmware update — yes, monitors get those. Also, test with a different resolution or cable type (HDMI vs DisplayPort).
One last thing: if you're using an HDMI switch or a long cable (over 10 feet), those are classic dropout sources. Take the switch out of the equation and see if that stops it.
I know this error is infuriating — it feels random and makes you doubt your hardware. But it's almost always fixable without buying a new monitor. Start with the cable, then the power settings, then the driver. You'll solve it.
