PC boots but monitor shows No Signal? Nine times out of ten it's a bad cable or wrong input source. Here's how to fix it fast.

You press the power button, fans spin up, lights come on – but your monitor just sits there with that stupid "No Signal" message. Yeah, I've been there. Let's cut the frustration and get you back to work.

The Quick Fix – 90% of the time this is it

  1. Check the cable at both ends. Unplug the HDMI or DisplayPort cable from the monitor and the PC, then plug it back in firmly. Sounds dumb, but I've seen cables work loose from a desk bump.
  2. Switch the monitor's input source. Most monitors have a button labeled Input or Source. Press it and cycle through HDMI1, HDMI2, DisplayPort, VGA. Your monitor might be looking at the wrong port. Had a client last month who'd accidentally hit the input button with his coffee mug – wasted 30 minutes troubleshooting.

1. The GPU isn't outputting (but fans spin)

If you have a dedicated graphics card, plug the monitor into the GPU's ports – not the motherboard's. I've seen people plug into the motherboard ports by mistake, and the CPU's integrated graphics might be disabled. If you're sure you're in the GPU, try removing and reseating the GPU in the PCIe slot.

2. The monitor needs a hard reset

Some monitors get stuck in a bad state. Unplug the monitor from power for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. This clears the internal capacitors and forces a cold boot. Works on Dell and LG monitors especially.

3. BIOS or boot conflict

If your PC has both an integrated GPU and a dedicated GPU, the BIOS might get confused. Enter the BIOS (usually by mashing Del or F2 during startup) and look for Primary Display Adapter. Set it to the dedicated GPU if that's what you're using. This is rare, but I've seen it on pre-built HP machines.

Prevention – how to stop this from happening again

  • Use good cables. Avoid the $3 Amazon Basics HDMI – they fail. Get a certified cable from a brand like Cable Matters or Monoprice.
  • Velcro your cables to the desk leg so they don't get tugged.
  • If you use a KVM switch or any adapter (HDMI to DVI, DisplayPort to HDMI), that's a common failure point. Test without it.
