That annoying paper-empty error even when the tray's full. I'll show you what really causes it and how to clear it.

When this error actually shows up

You load a fresh ream into the tray. The printer clicks, then stops. Windows throws up STATUS_DEVICE_PAPER_EMPTY (0X8000000E). You open the tray, see paper, close it. Same error. Maybe you even shake the tray, slam it back in, curse. I've been there. Had a client last month whose Brother MFC-L2750DW did this every Monday morning like clockwork. The paper was fine. The printer was just lying to us.

What's really happening

The error code 0X8000000E means the printer's paper sensor thinks the tray is bone-dry. But here's the kicker: most office printer paper sensors are mechanical little plastic levers or flags. They get stuck in the "down" position if the paper's pressing them too hard, if a scrap of wrapper is wedged under them, or if the tray isn't fully seated. On some HP LaserJets, the sensor gets gunked up with toner dust. On Canon imageCLASS models, the tray's metal contacts bend out of shape. In every case, the printer sees zero paper even though the tray is full.

Fix it in 5 steps

  1. Power down and unplug the printer. Wait 30 seconds. This drains any residual charge that might be holding the sensor in a false state.
  2. Remove the paper tray completely. Take out all paper. Look inside the tray cavity for the sensor lever—usually a small plastic tab on the left or right side. Gently push it up and down with your fingertip. It should spring back freely. If it sticks, spray a tiny bit of electronics contact cleaner on a Q-tip and wipe the pivot point. Do not use WD-40—it leaves a residue that attracts dust.
  3. Inspect the paper itself. Flip through the stack. Look for curled corners, torn edges, or a single wrinkled sheet that could be pushing the sensor down too hard. Fan the stack, tap it on the desk to align the edges, then reload it. Don't overfill—leave a finger's width of space above the max line.
  4. Re-seat the tray. Push it in firmly until you hear a distinct click. On many Brother and HP models, the tray has a latch that must engage. If the tray sits crooked, the sensor won't align with the paper.
  5. Plug in and power on. Send a test page. If the error persists, run the printer's built-in paper sensor calibration. On Brother printers, press Menu > General Setup > Paper > Calibrate. On HP, go to Setup > Tools > Paper Sensor Calibration. On Canon, hold Stop/Reset while powering on, then select Sensor Check.

Still broken? Check these two things

1. Foreign object in the paper path

I've pulled out paperclips, staples, sticky notes, and once a half-eaten granola bar wrapper from inside a tray. Anything that flips the sensor flag will trigger this error. Use a flashlight and look deep inside—sometimes a scrap hides behind the tray guides.

2. The tray's chip or ribbon cable

Some printers (looking at you, HP M404 series) have a small circuit board inside the tray with a ribbon cable that connects to the mainboard. If that cable is loose or the tray's chip is fried, the printer reports paper empty. Try a different tray if you have one. Otherwise, unplug the ribbon cable, reseat it, and reboot. Had a client whose HP LaserJet M404dn gave this error every time they used the third-party tray. The chip on the OEM tray worked fine. Cost $30 for a used OEM tray on eBay—fixed.

When to call it quits

If you've done all the steps and the sensor still sticks, the spring might be broken or the sensor arm snapped. On older printers, the plastic gets brittle. Replacement sensors are cheap (under $10 on Amazon), but the labor to swap them isn't. For home users, it's often cheaper to buy a new printer. For a business, spend the $50 for a repair shop to replace the sensor. I had a client waste three hours on a Canon MF743Cdw before I drove over and popped in a new sensor in 20 minutes. It's a known weak point on that model. The error code is the same every time—0X8000000E—but the fix is always mechanical, not software. Never waste time reinstalling drivers for this error. It's hardware, not a Windows issue.
