The Scenario

You're printing a receipt and the cutter chops right through the middle of a barcode, or leaves a 2-inch blank slip before cutting. This usually happens after swapping paper rolls, changing printer settings, or when the paper is slightly off-spec. The POS software spits out the right data, but the printer just goes rogue on where to slice.

Root Cause – It's Almost Always the Sensor

Receipt printers don't guess where to cut. They rely on one of two sensors to find the top of the next receipt:

  • Black mark sensor – looks for a black rectangle printed on the back of the paper (common on Epson TM-T88, Star TSP100).
  • Gap sensor – detects the gap between receipts on continuous roll paper (common on older Epson TM-U220, some Bixolon models).

The culprit is usually a dirty, blocked, or misaligned sensor. The printer can't find the mark or gap, so it cuts at the default position or the last known position. Paper dust, sticker residue, or even a smudge of coffee can throw it off. Also, cheap paper rolls often have faint or inconsistent black marks.

Fix – Step by Step

  1. Power off the printer. Unplug it. Wait 10 seconds. Then open the paper cover and remove the roll.
  2. Locate the sensor. It's a small plastic window or a tiny LED inside the paper path. On Epson TM-T88 models, it's near the paper exit, about 1 inch from the cutter. On Star TSP100, it's on the left side of the paper path.
  3. Clean the sensor. Use a lint-free swab or a coffee filter slightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher). Don't use water or Windex – they leave residue. Gently wipe the sensor window. Then dry it with a clean swab. Wait 2 minutes for the alcohol to evaporate completely.
  4. Check the paper orientation. Black mark paper must be loaded with the marks facing the sensor – usually toward the back or bottom of the printer. Check the manual or the sticker inside the paper compartment. If you load it upside down, the sensor can't see the marks.
  5. Recalibrate the paper sensor. This varies by brand:
    • Epson TM-T88: Hold the feed button while powering on. Keep holding until the LED flashes once, then release. The printer will feed a few inches and set the sensor threshold.
    • Star TSP100: Turn off the printer. Hold the paper feed button, turn it on, continue holding for 5 seconds until the LED flashes green. Release. It will auto-calibrate.
    • Bixolon SRP-350: Turn off. Press and hold the FEED button, power on, wait for the LED to blink orange, then release. Feed a few blank receipts to confirm.
  6. Test with a known good roll. If you're using a cheap no-name paper roll, swap it with a roll from a reputable brand (e.g., KANZAKI, Appleton). Faint or misaligned black marks are common with bargain paper.
  7. Check printer driver settings. In Windows, go to Devices and Printers, right-click your printer, select Printer Properties, then the Device Settings or Paper tab. Make sure the paper size matches your receipt length. For black mark paper, select "Black Mark" or "Mark Sensing" as the paper type.

If It Still Fails – Here's What to Check

  • Is the cutter blade damaged? If the blade is chipped or stuck, it can't cut cleanly. Open the cutter cover and look for paper debris. Clean any visible gunk with compressed air.
  • Is the paper tension too high? The paper roll should spin freely. If it drags, the printhead can't advance correctly, and the sensor misreads the position. Unwind a foot of paper and re-insert with less tension.
  • Is the sensor hardware failing? Rare, but I've seen it. If cleaning and calibration don't work, run the printer's built-in self-test. On most Epson and Star models, hold the FEED button while powering on and release after 3 seconds. It prints a config page. If the cut position is off on the self-test, the sensor is likely dead. Time for a replacement.
  • Is your POS software overriding the cut? Some POS systems (Square, Toast, Clover) send a specific cut command that overrides the printer's default. Check the software settings – there's often a "Cut after receipt" or "Set cut position" option. Set it to "Default" or "Automatic".

The fix is almost always a dirty sensor or cheap paper. Don't waste hours reinstalling drivers or swapping cables. Clean the sensor, recalibrate, and use good paper. I've seen this fix work for Epson TM-T88VI, Star SP700, and Bixolon SRP-275 – same story every time.
