Step 1 – The 30-Second Fix: Check Your Wi-Fi Band
Most smart plugs (especially older ones from 2020-2023) only work on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. They just won't see a 5GHz network. What's actually happening here is the plug's Wi-Fi chip is cheap – it only supports the slower, longer-range band.
Real-world trigger: You just bought a two-pack of TP-Link Kasa HS103 plugs. Your phone connects fine at home, but the app says “device not found”. Your phone is on the 5GHz band. The plug is screaming into the void.
Fix:
- Go to your phone's Wi-Fi settings.
- Look for your network's name. If it's something like “MyWiFi_5G” or “Home-5”, tap the one without “5G” or “5”.
- If your router combines both bands (same network name for 2.4 and 5), you need to temporarily disable 5GHz in your router settings. Most routers let you do this under “Wireless settings”. Or you can just walk far away from your router until your phone falls back to 2.4GHz.
- Now run the setup app again. Most plugs connect in under 60 seconds once on the right band.
Why this works: The plug sends a temporary Wi-Fi signal (like a mini access point) during setup. Your phone must be on the same band that the plug will later use. If your phone is on 5GHz, it can't talk to the plug's 2.4GHz-only signal.
Step 2 – The 5-Minute Fix: Factory Reset the Plug
If Step 1 didn't help, the plug might be stuck in a half-configured state from a previous attempt. You need to wipe its memory clean.
What you'll see: The LED on the plug blinks rapidly (usually red or orange) and never goes solid. That means it's trying to connect but can't find the network.
How to reset:
- For most plugs (TP-Link Kasa, Amazon Smart Plug, Wyze, Gosund): Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds. The LED will flash quickly, then change pattern. Release. It should now blink slowly – ready for setup.
- For some cheap no-name plugs: You might need to hold the button for 30 seconds. Seriously. Or press it 5 times quickly. Check the manual, but 10 seconds is the universal go-to.
After the reset, close the app completely, reopen it, and start setup fresh. Don't just tap “retry” – that often uses old data. Start from the “Add Device” screen.
Step 3 – The 15+ Minute Fix: Router Isolation & Distance Problems
Still failing? Now we look at your router. Two common culprits.
Culprit A: AP Isolation (Client Isolation)
Some routers (especially mesh systems like Google Nest or Eero) have a feature called AP Isolation or Client Isolation. It prevents devices on Wi-Fi from talking to each other. That's good for public networks, terrible for smart plugs – because the plug needs to talk to your phone during setup.
Fix: Log into your router admin page (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Look for “Wi-Fi settings” or “Advanced settings”. Find “AP Isolation” or “Client Isolation”. Turn it OFF. Save. Wait 30 seconds for the router to reboot. Then try setup again.
Culprit B: Wrong Router Channel Width
This one is rare but real. Some routers set the 2.4GHz channel width to 40MHz for speed. Smart plugs expect 20MHz. If the router uses 40MHz, the plug can't see the signal.
Fix: In your router's 2.4GHz settings, set channel width to 20MHz only. Don't use “auto”. Also set the channel to a fixed number (like 6 or 11) – don't use “auto” here either. Why? Because auto channel hopping can confuse a cheap plug that connects for 2 minutes during setup, then loses the network.
Culprit C: You're Too Far Away
This sounds dumb, but people do it. The smart plug is in a metal enclosure or behind a fridge. Move the plug to a power outlet within 10 feet of your router. Set it up there. Then move it to its final home. Many plugs stay connected once configured, even if the signal is weak.

If none of this works, the plug itself might be defective. I've seen this maybe 1 in 50 plugs. But before you return it, try a different phone (Android vs iPhone, or an old tablet). Some apps have weird Bluetooth or Wi-Fi compatibility issues that come down to the phone's radio, not the plug's.
One last thing: Check if your router uses WPA3 security. Some newer routers default to WPA3, but many smart plugs only speak WPA2. Set your router to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode or WPA2 only. That fix alone has saved me three separate times.
That's it. No magic, no “contact support” nonsense. Just the real causes.
