You press setup, the speaker scans, and nothing shows up. Your phone sees the network fine. The speaker sees nothing. This happens a lot with Echo Dots, Google Nest Minis, and older HomePods. The fix is usually simple.

The real fix: force 2.4GHz or change your router channel

Here's what's actually happening here. Most smart speakers only support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Your router might be broadcasting on 5GHz only, or using a combined name (band steering). The speaker can't see 5GHz networks, and band steering confuses it. Also, if your router uses a Wi-Fi channel above 11 (like 12 or 13), some speakers can't detect it. Let's fix that.

  1. Split your Wi-Fi bands. Log into your router (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Find the Wi-Fi settings. Look for "Smart Connect" or "Band Steering" and turn it off. Give the 2.4GHz network a different name, like "HomeWiFi_24" and the 5GHz network a different name, like "HomeWiFi_5". Save the changes and reboot the router.
  2. Set the 2.4GHz channel to 1, 6, or 11. In the same router settings, find the 2.4GHz channel setting. If it's on "Auto" or a channel above 11, change it to 1, 6, or 11. These are the only non-overlapping channels in the 2.4GHz band. Most smart speakers expect one of these.
  3. Reset the smart speaker and try again. After the router changes, do a factory reset on the speaker (hold the action button for 10-15 seconds until the light turns orange). Then run setup again. It should now see your 2.4GHz network.

Why this works

The reason step 1 works is that smart speakers don't have the hardware to handle 5GHz Wi-Fi. They're built cheaply for a single purpose — listening and streaming audio. 5GHz chips cost more, so manufacturers skip them. By splitting bands, you remove the confusion. The speaker sees only the 2.4GHz network and connects.

Channel 12 and 13 are legal in some countries (like the UK and Japan) but not in the US. Even if they're legal, many smart speakers only scan channels 1-11 because that's the US market default. If your router auto-selects a high channel, the speaker won't find it. Manually setting to 1, 6, or 11 fixes that.

Less common variations of the same issue

  • Hidden SSID. If you hide your network name, the speaker might not show it in the list. Unhide it temporarily during setup, or type the SSID manually if the app allows.
  • Router firewall blocking. Some routers have a "Client Isolation" or "AP Isolation" option that prevents devices from talking to each other. Turn that off.
  • Too many nearby networks. If you live in an apartment with 20+ Wi-Fi networks, the speaker's low-power scanner can get overloaded. Move the speaker closer to the router during setup (within 1 meter).
  • Old firmware on the speaker. Rare, but possible. Check if the speaker has any USB port for forced firmware update. For Amazon devices, sometimes plugging it into a computer triggers an update.
  • Bluetooth interference. Some smart speakers use Bluetooth during setup. If your phone's Bluetooth is off, turn it on. Or if you have a Bluetooth device near the speaker (like a wireless mouse), move it away.

Prevention

Once the speaker is connected, it'll usually stay on the 2.4GHz network forever. To avoid future issues, keep the bands split permanently. Name them clearly so you know which is which. Also, set your router to reboot weekly — many routers get flaky with Wi-Fi channel scanning after days of uptime. And don't assume the speaker will join your 5GHz network later. It won't. That's just how they're built.

If you buy a new speaker, check the specs before setup. Look for "Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n" (that's 2.4GHz). Avoid ones that only say "802.11 a" or "ac" without the "b/g/n" — those are 5GHz only and won't work with most smart speakers.
