Step 1: Check the Paper Size Sensor
Most printers, especially HP LaserJets and Canon imageCLASS models, have a small lever or flap inside the tray that detects paper length. That lever gets stuck or dirty. Here's what you do:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Pull out Tray 1 completely.
- Look for a small plastic tab or lever near the back of the tray — it's usually on the right or left side. Slide it back and forth a few times. You'll hear a click if it's working.

Old HP LaserJet 4000 or 4050 models have a physical DIP switch inside the tray that sets paper size. If someone flipped it, you get the error. Look for a small switch labeled Paper Size near the back of the tray and set it to match your paper.
Custom Paper Sizes

- Always lock the paper guides snugly. Loose guides cause misreads.
