The Quick Fix: Change Your Wi-Fi Channel
Open your router admin page (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 — check the sticker on the bottom). Log in with the admin credentials. Look for Wireless Settings or Wi-Fi Settings.
- Set the 2.4GHz band to channel 1, 6, or 11 — no other channels. These are the only non-overlapping channels. If you pick channel 3, you're overlapping with both 1 and 6. That kills your signal when you move rooms.
- For 5GHz, pick a channel between 36 and 48 (DFS channels like 52-144 can cause random drops when radar detection triggers).
- Save the settings and reboot the router.
That's it. Test it. Walk to the farthest room. If the drops stop, you're done.
Why This Works
Your neighbors' Wi-Fi is probably overlapping on the same channel. When you move rooms, your phone tries to reconnect on a different channel because the signal strength drops below a threshold. But if that channel is also congested, your phone keeps bouncing between channels. That looks like a drop to you.
Channel 1, 6, and 11 on 2.4GHz don't overlap. So your phone stays locked on one channel, and the handoff between rooms becomes seamless. No more buffering.
Also, 5GHz is great for speed but terrible for walls. If you're moving between rooms, your device might switch to 2.4GHz because 5GHz drops too fast. That switch itself causes a brief drop. Using a fixed channel on both bands prevents unnecessary jumping.
Less Common Variations of This Issue
Variation 1: Dual-Band Steering (band steering)
Some routers automatically push you to 5GHz when you're close and 2.4GHz when you're far. Sounds smart. It's not. The handoff between bands often takes 2-5 seconds, which is an eternity for a video call. Fix: Disable band steering in your router settings. Give each band a different SSID (name them "Home-2G" and "Home-5G"). Then manually connect to 2.4GHz from your phone. You'll stay on it across rooms.
Variation 2: Old Router Firmware
