Before You Ditch Your Router
You're mid-video call, and boom—the Wi-Fi icon shows a yellow triangle. Or you're gaming and the ping spikes to 900ms right when you need to clutch. I've seen this at a dozen client sites. The frustrating part? The router is fine. The rest of the house is fine. It's just your Windows 10 machine that's being flaky.
Here's the thing: Windows 10 has a nasty habit of switching Wi-Fi channels or toggling the adapter aggressively. And sometimes, the driver update Microsoft pushes is garbage. But you don't need to reinstall Windows or buy a new laptop. Let's go through the fixes that actually work, in order of effort.
Fix 1: The 30-Second Reset
Don't skip this. I've had clients spend an hour reinstalling drivers when a simple reset did the trick. What you're doing is clearing the current connection state and re-acquiring an IP address.
- Click the Wi-Fi icon in the system tray.
- Click Network & Internet settings — or right-click the Wi-Fi icon and pick that.
- Under Change your network settings, click Network reset.
- Click Reset now and confirm. Windows will forget all your Wi-Fi networks, so grab your password beforehand.
After the reset, you'll need to reboot (Windows usually forces this). Reconnect to your network and see if it holds. If you're still dropping, move on.
Why this works: It clears out any corruption in the Winsock catalog and resets the TCP/IP stack. Also flush the DNS cache manually if you like—open Command Prompt as admin and run ipconfig /flushdns. But honestly, the Network reset does the same thing and more.
Fix 2: The 5-Minute Power Saving Tweak
This is the #1 culprit I find in the wild. Windows loves to “save power” by putting your Wi-Fi adapter to sleep, or dropping the transmit power when it thinks you're idle. The result? Your connection drops when you're not actively scrolling—then it takes a few seconds to wake up, which feels like a disconnect.
Here's how to shut that down:
- Press Win + X and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters. You'll see something like “Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX200” or “Realtek RTL8723BE.”
- Right-click your Wi-Fi adapter and select Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
- Click OK.
Now, if you don't see that tab, don't panic. Some drivers hide it. Try this instead:
- Right-click the Start button and choose Power Options (or search “Edit power plan”).
- Click Change advanced power settings.
- Scroll down to Wireless Adapter Settings → Power Saving Mode.
- Set both On battery and Plugged in to Maximum Performance.
- Hit OK and restart.
This one fix resolved Wi-Fi drop issues for a client who was losing connection every time they paused a YouTube video. It's that common.
Fix 3: The 15-Minute Driver Deep Clean
If you're still dropping, it's time to get aggressive with the driver. Windows Update sometimes installs a generic driver that's buggy. Your computer manufacturer may have a better one—or vice versa. Here's the no-nonsense approach:
Step 1: Uninstall the current driver completely
- Open Device Manager again.
- Right-click your Wi-Fi adapter → Uninstall device.
- Check the box that says “Delete the driver software for this device” — yes, do that.
- Click Uninstall.
Now Windows will reinstall the generic driver on reboot. But we don't want that. So before you reboot, do this:
Step 2: Download the correct driver manually
Head to your laptop manufacturer's support site (Dell, HP, Lenovo, or the adapter maker—Intel or Realtek). Search for your exact model and download the latest Wi-Fi driver. Don't use a “driver updater” tool—they're crap. Do it manually.
Make sure you get the right version for your Windows (64-bit usually). Save it to your desktop.
Step 3: Reboot and install
Reboot the machine. When Windows comes back, it might have already installed a driver. That's fine—it'll be the generic one. Now run the installer you downloaded. It'll replace the generic with the proper one. Restart again.
If you're feeling extra technical, you can use the Device Manager → Update driver → Browse my computer → point to where you saved the driver. But running the installer is simpler.
When It's Not Your PC
If you've done all three and still see drops, it's time to look outside the machine. A colleague of mine had a Wi-Fi drop that turned out to be a router's auto-channel feature fighting with a neighbor's router. Log into your router and set a fixed channel (like 6 or 11) instead of “Auto.” Also, check if you're on a 2.4GHz network and your neighbor's microwave is nuking it—switch to 5GHz if your router supports it.
Another quick test: connect your PC to the router via Ethernet for a day. If the drops vanish, the problem is wireless interference, not your network stack.
One Last Tip
If you're still pulling your hair out, check if your adapter supports 802.11k/v/r roaming. Sometimes Windows aggressively roams between access points. You can disable roaming aggressiveness in the adapter's advanced properties (in Device Manager, under Advanced tab, set Roaming Aggressiveness to Lowest). I've seen this fix flaky connections in offices with multiple APs.
Start with Fix 1, stop when it works. Most people are done after Fix 2. If not, the driver dance will usually nail it.
