When your router keeps dying in the middle of the day

It's 3 PM on a Tuesday in July. You're in a Zoom call, and suddenly the Wi-Fi drops. The router's blinking like a Christmas tree, but nothing works. You unplug it, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in — and it works for another hour. Then it dies again.

This is classic router overheating. The router shuts itself off to protect the hardware from damage. It's not broken — it's just too hot inside. I've seen this happen on TP-Link Archer C7s, Netgear Nighthawks, and even those cheap ISP-provided boxes. The trigger is always the same: heavy traffic (like streaming, gaming, or video calls) plus poor airflow.

Why this happens — the simple explanation

Your router has a chip inside called the CPU. When you use Wi-Fi heavily (download big files, watch 4K video, or run many devices), that CPU works hard. Hard work means heat. Most routers don't have fans. They rely on passive cooling — heat sinks and tiny vents. If those vents are blocked, or the room is warm, the heat builds up. Once the chip hits about 85-90°C (185-194°F), it triggers a thermal shutdown. That's the hard crash you're seeing.

Some routers also have weak power adapters. A hot adapter can drop voltage, making the router unstable. But heat is the main villain here.

Fix it in 5 steps

Skip the expensive 'gaming router' upgrade — these steps fix 90% of overheating routers for free.

  1. Move the router out of the cabinet
    If it's inside a bookcase, on a carpet, or behind the TV, move it. Put it on a hard, flat surface like a desk or shelf. Leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) of space on all sides. No stacking anything on top of it — not a book, not a paper, nothing.
  2. Check the vents for dust
    Dust is like a blanket for your router. Use compressed air (the kind for keyboards) to blow out any buildup. Do this once a month if you have pets or live in a dusty area.
  3. Elevate it for better airflow
    Put the router on a wire rack or use little rubber feet (like $2 furniture pads from a hardware store). Raising it even half an inch lets air flow underneath. Some people use two bottle caps — works fine.
  4. Reduce the workload if you can
    If you have 20+ devices connected, some routers can't handle that while staying cool. Disconnect old phones, smart bulbs, or unused laptops. Every device generates heat from the CPU.
  5. Add a small fan (the real fix)
    This is the most effective solution. Buy a small USB desk fan (under $10). Point it at the router's vents. Not directly at the plastic — just close enough to move the hot air away. Most routers have a USB port on the back — plug the fan into that. The fan turns on when the router does. I've done this for clients with Netgear R7000s that crashed every 30 minutes. Fan fixed it.

Try these last checks:

  • Update the firmware — Some old firmware versions run the CPU at full speed constantly. Check the router admin page (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) for a firmware update. TP-Link and Asus have automatic checkers. Netgear makes you download the file manually.
  • Replace the power adapter — If your adapter feels hot to the touch, it may be failing. Use a new one with the exact same voltage and at least the same amperage. A bad adapter can cause crashes even when the router is cool.
  • Check the environment temp — If your room is above 30°C (86°F), no router will survive without a fan. Move it to a cooler room, or run a small AC fan nearby.

If the router still crashes after all this, the internal chip might be cooked. That's rare — I've only seen it in routers that ran hot for years. In that case, yes, you need a new router. But try the fan first. It saves more routers than any hardware upgrade ever will.
