Wireless Printer Setup Can't Find My Wi-Fi Network – Fix
Your printer can't see your Wi-Fi? Usually it's a band mismatch or signal issue. Here's how to get it connected in under 10 minutes.
1. The Printer and Router Are on Different Wi-Fi Bands
This is the #1 reason your printer can't see your network. Most printers only support the 2.4GHz band. Your phone and laptop might be on 5GHz. The printer sees the 5GHz band but can't connect, or it's scanning the wrong band entirely.
I had a client last month with a brand new HP Envy. Took me 20 minutes of mucking around before I realized their router was set to broadcast only 5GHz. Switched it to dual-band, and the printer found the network instantly.
Fix: Log into your router's admin page (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Look for Wi-Fi settings. Make sure 2.4GHz is turned on and broadcasting. If you have separate SSID names (like "Home_5G" and "Home"), pick the one without "5G" in it for the printer.

2. The Network Is Hidden or Not Broadcasting
If you turned off SSID broadcast for security reasons, the printer won't see your network in the list. It's not broken – it just can't find what's not advertised.
Fix: You've got two choices. Easiest: temporarily enable SSID broadcast. Connect the printer. Then you can hide it again. Or, in the printer's setup menu, look for an option like "Add Hidden Network" or "Enter SSID Manually." You'll need to type the network name exactly (case matters). Then enter the Wi-Fi password.
On most HP printers, it's under Settings > Network > Wireless > Advanced > Enter New SSID. On Canon, it's Wireless LAN Setup > Manual Connect.
3. Router Proximity or Interference
Printers have weak Wi-Fi radios. If your router is in the basement and the printer is in the attic, it's not going to work well. Walls, metal shelves, and microwaves can all block the signal.
Fix: Move the printer closer to the router temporarily during setup. Even 10 feet makes a difference. Once connected, you can move it back, but don't expect perfect performance through 3 walls. If it doesn't work, use a Wi-Fi repeater or move the router.
Quick test: Hold your phone next to the printer. Open Wi-Fi settings and see how many bars you get. If it's 2 or less, that's your problem.
4. WPS Button Method (Works on Most Printers)
If the printer still can't find the network after trying bands and distance, use the WPS button. This bypasses the network scan entirely. It's a direct handshake between router and printer.
- Press the WPS button on your router (look for a button labeled WPS, often on the back).
- Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your printer (or go to the printer menu and select WPS connection).
- Wait 30-60 seconds. The printer should connect automatically.
WPS doesn't work on all routers. Some modern ones disable it for security. But it's worth a shot if the regular scan fails.
5. Outdated Printer Firmware
Old firmware can have bugs that stop it from seeing newer routers. I've seen this happen with older Brother and Epson models after a router firmware update.
Fix: Download the latest firmware from the printer manufacturer's website. If the printer is already connected via USB, update through the software. If not, download it on a PC and transfer via USB drive (most printers accept firmware updates from a USB stick).
