Canon Printer Error 5200: Quick Fixes From Real Repairs
Canon Error 5200 means the printer's internal temp sensor or motor is jammed. Start with a simple power drain, then check the ink carriage, and finally clean the encoder strip.
What Error 5200 Actually Means
Canon Error 5200 shows up as "Printer Error 5200 – Restart Required" on your screen. It's a general hardware fault. The printer's internal computer detected something wrong with the carriage motor, the temperature sensor, or the encoder strip that tracks where the print head moves.
I've seen this on Canon PIXMA MG series (MG2500, MG3500, MG5700), MX series (MX490, MX510), and TS series (TS3100, TS5100). Usually happens after you pull out paper that jammed, or after the printer sits unused for weeks. One client had it after dropping a paper clip inside the paper tray.
Don't waste time factory resetting or reinstalling drivers. The fix is inside the printer. Here's what I do, from fastest to hardest.
Fix 1: The 30-Second Power Drain
This works about 30% of the time. The printer's internal computer gets stuck in a fault state. You need to fully discharge it.
- Turn off the printer using the power button.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall.
- Wait 60 seconds. Not 10 seconds. Wait a full minute.
- While unplugged, press and hold the printer's power button for 15 seconds. This drains any leftover charge in the capacitors.
- Plug the power cord back in, then turn the printer on.
If the error is gone, you're done. If not, move to the next fix. Skip the USB cable disconnect – power drain is what matters here.
Fix 2: Check the Carriage and Paper Path (5 Minutes)
Error 5200 often triggers when the carriage (the part holding the ink cartridges) hits something. A piece of paper, a sticker, even a thick envelope can block it.
- Open the printer cover. The carriage should move to the center. If it doesn't, gently push it to the right, then back to the middle.
- Look for any paper scraps, staples, or packing tape inside. I once found a crumpled receipt that caused this error.
- Clear the paper path. Open the rear paper tray and check for stuck paper there too.
- Close the printer and try printing again.
If the error returns after a few minutes, the issue might be the carriage lock. Some Canon models have a plastic lock that holds the carriage during shipping. If you bought a used printer, check that lock was removed. It looks like a small orange or blue plastic piece near the left side of the carriage.
Fix 3: Clean the Encoder Strip (15 Minutes)
This is the real fix for most Canon Error 5200 cases. The encoder strip is a thin, transparent plastic strip with tiny black lines that runs across the width of the printer. When it gets dirty, the printer can't read the carriage position and throws error 5200.
I had a client whose office printer had this error every week. I cleaned the encoder strip once, and it's been running fine for six months. Skip the ink pad waste counter reset – that's not the issue here.
What you need:
- Isopropyl alcohol (70% or 90%). Rubbing alcohol works too.
- Lint-free cloth or coffee filter. No paper towels – they leave fibers.
- Flashlight to see the strip clearly.
- Small piece of cardboard or plastic to hold the carriage in place while you work.
Step-by-step:
- Unplug the printer. Let it sit for 5 minutes so the power capacitors discharge.
- Open the front cover. The carriage should be in the middle. If not, gently move it there.
- Locate the encoder strip. It's a long, clear strip that runs from the left side to the right side, just behind the ink cartridges. It looks like a thin ruler.
- Check if the strip is dirty or scratched. Use the flashlight. If it looks cloudy or has ink spots, clean it.
- Dampen the cloth with alcohol – don't soak it. You want it damp, not dripping.
- Gently hold the strip with one hand and wipe it from one end to the other. Don't pull or stretch it – it's delicate and can break.
- Let the alcohol dry for 2–3 minutes.
- Close the printer, plug it in, and turn it on.
- Try printing a test page.
If the encoder strip is scratched or has a cut, you'll need to replace it. That's a more involved repair – you have to remove the printer's top cover and feed the new strip through the carriage. I'd only recommend that if your printer is otherwise in good shape and you're comfortable taking things apart. For most people, cleaning the strip fixes it.
When to Give Up
If none of these fixes work, the printer might have a bad main logic board or a dead carriage motor. Both are expensive to replace. In my experience, it's cheaper to buy a new Canon printer. The MG2500 series is under $50 new, and the TS3100 is about $60. Don't spend $80 on a repair for a $60 printer.
But try the fixes first. I've saved dozens of printers with just the power drain and encoder strip clean. One last tip: after fixing, run a print head alignment from the printer settings. It helps the printer recalibrate and can prevent the error from coming back.
Real story: a client's Canon MX490 kept giving error 5200 after every power outage. A full drain fixed it, but the error returned. I cleaned the encoder strip, and it's been two years without a repeat. The strip had a thin layer of dust and ink that looked like a film. Wiped off in 30 seconds.
