30-Second Fix: Reseat Your RAM
Had a client last week whose office PC beeped three times and showed nothing on screen. Turned out a RAM stick had wiggled loose. This happens more than you'd think, especially after moving a computer or cleaning inside.
What to do:
- Shut down the computer completely. Unplug the power cable.
- Open the case. Touch a metal part of the case to ground yourself.
- Find the RAM sticks. They're long, thin boards near the CPU.

Clear the CMOS
The CMOS is a small battery on the motherboard that saves BIOS settings. Removing it resets everything. I've seen this fix a dozen computers that wouldn't boot after a power surge.
- Shut down and unplug.
- Find the round silver battery on the motherboard. It looks like a coin.
- Pop it out with your fingernail or a small screwdriver.
- Wait 5 minutes. Or press the power button for 30 seconds while the battery is out—this drains leftover charge.
- Put the battery back in, plug in, and try to boot.
If it boots now, the BIOS was corrupted. Your settings (like boot order) are back to default. Reconfigure them in BIOS if needed.
Check for Physical Damage
If clearing CMOS doesn't work, inspect the motherboard for damage. Look for:
- Bulging or leaking capacitors (they look like little cans with a cross on top; if they're swollen or have brown goo, the board is dead).
- Burn marks or discoloration near the CPU or RAM slots.
- Loose wires or a disconnected CPU power cable (the 4-pin or 8-pin connector near the CPU).
Had a client last month whose motherboard had a bulging capacitor right next to the RAM slot. Replaced the board, and the beeping stopped.
Still Beeping?
If you've reseated RAM, tested sticks one by one, cleared CMOS, and the motherboard looks clean, the motherboard is likely dead. Or the CPU. But CPUs rarely fail—it's almost always the motherboard or RAM. Replace the motherboard first. If you're not comfortable doing that, a repair shop can test with a known-good RAM stick and motherboard in 10 minutes.
One Last Thing: Check the Beep Pattern
Different beep patterns tell you what's wrong. Here's a quick table for common ones:
