Yeah, this one gets everyone the first time. You spend good money on 3600MHz RAM, boot up, and see 2133MHz in Task Manager. Feels like a scam. It isn't—here's the fix.
The Fix: Enable XMP (or DOCP/EXPO) in BIOS
Restart your PC and mash the Delete or F2 key as soon as the screen goes black. That gets you into the BIOS. The key depends on your motherboard—F2 on most MSI boards, Delete on ASUS and Gigabyte. If you're not sure, check your motherboard manual or just spam both.
Once you're in, look for a setting called XMP (Intel), DOCP (ASUS AMD boards), or EXPO (for DDR5 on AMD). It's usually on the main screen, or under AI Tweaker/OC/Tweaker tabs. Here's a quick rundown:

So your motherboard plays it safe and runs the memory at the standard speed until you tell it otherwise. Your CPU or motherboard can't handle the speed
Not every CPU's memory controller can hit 3600MHz. Ryzen 1000 and 2000 series chips often struggle above 3200MHz. Some older Intel boards cap out too. Check your CPU's spec sheet for supported memory speeds. If your CPU caps at 2933MHz, that's your ceiling.
You're using the wrong slots
With two sticks, they need to go in the second and fourth slots from the CPU (usually labeled A2 and B2). If they're in slots 1 and 3, or side by side, the board might not train properly. I've seen this more times than I can count. Pull the sticks and reseat them correctly.
The profile is unstable
If the screen goes black after enabling XMP, or it boots but crashes under load, the profile might be too aggressive for your setup. Try a lower XMP profile if one exists, or manually set the speed to the next step down (e.g., 3200 instead of 3600). Also update your BIOS—memory compatibility improves with every version.
DDR5 quirks
DDR5 is pickier. On some boards, XMP (now called EXPO for AMD) will fail to boot on the first try. The board might need a few attempts to train the memory. If it's stuck in a reboot loop, clear the CMOS (jumper or battery) and start over. Also, make sure you're using the exact slots specified in the manual—DDR5 doesn't like sharing signal lanes.
Prevention: Set It Once, Forget It
After you enable XMP, always do a stability test. Run MemTest86 (free USB boot tool) for at least one full pass, or use Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility / AMD's Ryzen Master to stress the memory. If it passes overnight, you're done.
For the future: keep your BIOS updated. Memory training gets better with each build. And if you ever buy a new kit, first check your motherboard's QVL (Qualified Vendor List) on the manufacturer's website. That's the list of specific RAM models tested to work. It's boring but it saves headaches.
Quick tip: you can also check your current speed in CPU-Z (free). Click the Memory tab and look at the "DRAM Frequency". If it says 1066MHz, that's actually 2133MHz effective—DDR means double data rate. Don't panic when it shows half the number you expect.
