External Hard Drive Gets Very Hot – What to Do

Your external hard drive can get very hot during big file transfers or long backups. This can cause damage. Here's how to cool it down.

You plug in your external hard drive to copy a big folder of photos, or maybe you're running a full system backup. After maybe 20 or 30 minutes, you pick up the drive and it's really hot to the touch. Like, uncomfortably hot. Sometimes you can even smell a faint plastic smell. This happens more often with USB 3.0 or USB-C drives that are small and don't have their own power brick. The real trigger is when the drive is working hard for a long time, like copying 50GB of video files or running disk repair software.

Why This Happens

The main reason is simple physics. Inside that little box, there's a spinning hard drive (or sometimes a solid state drive) that's got a motor and moving parts. When you move a lot of data, the controller chip and the motor heat up. The small plastic or metal case doesn't have much airflow. It's like running a computer inside a sock. Some drives also use a USB port for both power and data, so they're drawing power through a thin cable, which makes the connector area get hot too. If the drive is laying flat on a desk or carpet, it can't let heat escape from the bottom. The problem gets worse if the room is warm, or if you're using a cheap USB hub that doesn't deliver enough power.

What You Can Do About It

You don't need to buy a new drive. These steps will help most of the time. Do them in this order.

  1. Stop using the drive for at least 10 minutes. Unplug it. Let it cool down completely on a flat, hard surface like a desk or a kitchen counter. Not on a rug or a pillow.
  2. Check the cable. Use the original cable that came with the drive. Some third-party cables are thin and cause power loss, which makes the drive hotter. If the cable is damaged or loose, replace it with a short, thick one.
  3. Plug the drive directly into a computer port. Don't use a USB hub, especially a cheap one without external power. Plug it into a port on the back of your desktop computer, or on the side of your laptop. If you must use a hub, get a powered one that plugs into the wall.
  4. Stand the drive on its side. Most external drives have vents on the sides or bottom. Laying it flat blocks those vents. Stand it on its edge, like a book on a shelf. This lets air flow under and around it.
  5. Put a small fan near it. A desk fan blowing across the drive makes a huge difference. Even a laptop cooling pad under the drive works. You don't need a special hard drive cooler – any fan that moves air is fine.
  6. Don't stack things on top of it. Keep it alone on the desk. No papers, no other drives, no laptop sitting on it. Heat needs to escape from the top too.

If It Still Gets Too Hot

If you've done all those steps and the drive still gets scary hot, there might be a problem with the drive itself. Here's what to check next.

  • Check the drive's health. Download a free tool like CrystalDiskInfo (Windows) or DriveDx (Mac). It will show the drive temperature. If it's over 55°C (130°F) during normal use, that's too hot. If it's over 60°C, stop using it immediately.
  • Look for firmware updates. Go to the drive manufacturer's website (Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, Samsung). Some models had firmware bugs that caused overheating. Updating the firmware can fix it.
  • Check if the drive is failing. If you hear clicking sounds, or the drive makes a grinding noise, or it randomly disconnects, the heat might be a sign of a mechanical failure. Back up your data right now, then replace the drive.
  • Consider a different enclosure. If you built this drive yourself using a bare drive and a separate USB enclosure, the enclosure might have bad ventilation. Buy an enclosure with a metal case and a fan. Metal conducts heat better than plastic.
  • Switch to a solid state drive (SSD). SSDs generate much less heat than spinning hard drives. If you can afford it, replace your external HDD with an external SSD. It will run cooler, faster, and be more durable. For reference, a Samsung T7 or Crucial X8 runs barely warm even after copying 100GB.

One last thing: if the drive is under warranty and it's getting hot enough to burn your hand (over 50°C or 122°F), contact the manufacturer. Some models like the Seagate Backup Plus or WD My Passport had known heat issues. They might replace it for free. Don't put up with a drive that feels like a hot potato – that heat shortens the drive's life by months or years.
