Fix a Stuck Mechanical Key That Repeats Input
A stuck key repeating input is usually gunk or a bent switch pin. Here's how to fix it without replacing the whole board.

Why does a mechanical key get stuck repeating input?
I've seen this dozens of times — usually on a Cherry MX Blue or Brown that's been living under a desk for two years. The switch itself isn't broken mechanically; it's either got crud inside or one of its pins got bent during assembly. A bent pin can short the circuit, making the keyboard think you're holding the key down. Or dust and dried soda get between the contact leaves, causing intermittent contact that makes the input repeat.
Last month a client had his W key double-tapping mid-game. He'd already bought a new keyboard and was about to toss the old one. I popped the keycap, shot some contact cleaner in, and it was fixed in 30 seconds. Don't throw away a good board for a $5 fix.
Fix steps — try these in order
- Unplug the keyboard. Always disconnect USB power before poking around inside switches. You can short something if it's live.
- Remove the keycap. Use a wire-style key puller. If you don't have one, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver wrapped in tape. Don't scrape the PCB.
- Check for obvious junk. Look for hair, crumbs, or sticky residue around the switch stem. Blow it out with canned air if you see loose stuff.
- Spray contact cleaner. Get a can of CRC QD Electronic Cleaner or DeoxIT D5. Stick the red straw into the switch housing (between the top housing and the stem) and give it a quick 1-second blast. Press the key firmly 20 times to work it in.
- Test it. Plug the keyboard back in and open a text editor. Type the key repeatedly. If it's still repeating, go to step 6.
- Desolder the switch (for soldered boards). If you have a hot-swap board, just pull the switch out with a switch puller. For soldered boards: heat the two solder joints on the PCB (one on each pin), use a solder sucker or wick, then remove the switch.
- Inspect the pins. Look at the two metal pins on the bottom of the switch. One or both might be bent sideways. Straighten them with tweezers — they should be perfectly parallel to each other and perpendicular to the switch bottom.
- Reinstall the switch. Push it back into the PCB carefully — make sure all pins go straight into the holes. Solder it back if needed. Pop the keycap on and test again.
Alternative fixes if the main one fails
If cleaning and straightening pins didn't work, the switch itself might have a broken spring or worn-out contact leaf. Here's what to try before tossing the board:
- Swap with a less-used key. If you never use Scroll Lock or Pause, move its switch to the problem spot. You'll need to desolder both and swap them. This proves if the issue is the switch or the PCB.
- Lubricate the switch stem. A dry switch can sometimes chatter. Use a tiny drop of Krytox 205g0 on the stem sides — not on the contact leaves. This is a last-resort trick.
- Replace the switch entirely. Buy a single switch of the same type (Cherry MX, Gateron, Kailh — make sure it matches). Desolder the old one, solder in the new one. Cost about $1 and 10 minutes.
- Software workaround (temporary). In Windows 10/11, go to Keyboard Properties and reduce the repeat delay. This doesn't fix the hardware but stops the repeating input from driving you nuts until you can swap the switch.
Prevention tips
Mechanical keyboards are tough but they hate sticky drinks and dust. Here's how to keep them clean:
- Don't eat or drink over the board — I know, obvious, but I've cleaned Coke out of a Razer BlackWidow that looked like a crime scene.
- Use a keyboard cover when not in use. A silicone cover costs $10 and stops dust from settling into switches.
- Clean keycaps every 6 months. Pop them all off, soak in warm soapy water for an hour, scrub with a soft brush, dry completely before reinstalling.
- If you live in a dusty environment, blow the board out with canned air every couple of months. Aim at the switch gaps.
One more thing: if you're buying a new keyboard, consider a hot-swap board. They let you pull a bad switch and plug in a new one without soldering. I've switched to a Keychron Q1 with hot-swap sockets — when a switch dies, it's a 30-second fix instead of pulling out the soldering iron.
