Gaming Controller Keeps Disconnecting Mid-Game? Here's the Fix

Your Controller Keeps Dropping Out? I Get It.

There's nothing worse than being in the middle of a boss fight or a clutch round and your controller just decides to disconnect. You're mashing buttons, nothing happens, and by the time it reconnects, you're dead. I've seen this more times than I can count—usually with Xbox controllers on Windows 10 or 11, but it happens with PS4/5 controllers too.

The Real Fix: Kill USB Power Saving

Most of the time, the problem is that Windows is being too smart for its own good. It's turning off power to your USB ports to save battery when you're not using them, but it's doing it while you're gaming.

Step 1: Disable USB Selective Suspend

  1. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  2. Click Change plan settings next to your active power plan (usually Balanced or High Performance).
  3. Click Change advanced power settings.
  4. Scroll down to USB settings > USB selective suspend setting.
  5. Set it to Disabled for both "On battery" and "Plugged in".

Click Apply and OK. Reboot your PC. This alone fixes about 80% of controller disconnects.

Step 2: Check Device Manager for Power Management

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Right-click each entry that says USB Root Hub (or Generic USB Hub), select Properties.
  4. Go to the Power Management tab.
  5. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  6. Do this for every USB Root Hub you see. There might be three or four of them.

I had a client last month whose Xbox controller dropped out every 10 minutes. This was the fix.

Why This Works

Windows has a built-in feature called USB selective suspend. It's supposed to cut power to USB devices that aren't being used to save battery. But it's too aggressive—it detects your controller as "idle" even when you're holding it and pressing buttons. The controller goes silent for a second, and Windows kills the port. Then the controller has to reconnect, which takes a few seconds.

By disabling this, the USB port stays powered all the time. Your controller never loses connection because of power saving.

Less Common Variations of This Issue

Wireless Controller (Bluetooth) Disconnects

If you're using a Bluetooth controller, the fix can be different. Bluetooth has its own power saving. Go to Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click your Bluetooth adapter, and uncheck power management there too. Also, make sure your Bluetooth driver is updated—go to the manufacturer's website (Intel, Realtek, etc.) and download the latest one. Windows Update often messes this up.

Controller Disconnects Only in Certain Games

Sometimes it's not hardware. Games like Fortnite or Call of Duty have controller settings that can cause conflicts. Check in-game controller settings: turn off any "vibration" or "trigger effects" if your controller has them. I've seen Xbox One controllers disconnect in Forza because of force feedback settings.

Controller Disconnects After a While

If it takes 30+ minutes to disconnect, it might be overheating. Check your PC's USB ports for dust or try a different port. Also, if you're using a USB extension cable, try plugging the controller directly into the PC. Some cables can't supply enough power over long distances.

Prevention Tips for the Future

  • Update your controller firmware. Xbox controllers can be updated via the Xbox Accessories app on Windows. PS5 controllers via the PS5 itself or a PC app. Outdated firmware can cause random drops.
  • Use a dedicated USB port. Some motherboards have separate USB controllers. Plug your controller into a port that isn't sharing bandwidth with other devices.
  • Keep your PC clean. Literally—dust in USB ports can cause intermittent connections. Blow them out with compressed air.
  • Don't trust Windows Update. It often installs generic USB drivers that suck. If the problem comes back, go to your motherboard manufacturer's site and download the latest chipset drivers. That includes USB drivers.

That's it. Try the USB selective suspend fix first—it's the most common culprit. If that doesn't work, go down the list. You'll have a rock-solid connection in no time.
