Motherboard chipset thermal shutdown happens when the chipset hits 100°C+ and the board cuts power. Here are the real fixes, from dust to fan failure.

1. Dust Blocking the Chipset Heatsink

This is the most common reason your motherboard shuts down under load. The chipset heatsink gets packed with dust, especially on boards with a chipset fan like the MSI X570 series or any B550 board. Dust blocks airflow, heat builds up, and the chipset hits 95-105°C. The board then cuts power to protect itself.

What's actually happening here is the chipset's thermal sensor hits a critical threshold (usually around 100°C on AMD AM4 boards, 105°C on Intel LGA1700 boards) and triggers a hardware-level shutdown. This isn't a software crash — it's a safety feature.

Fix: Turn off your PC, unplug the power cable, and open the case. Use compressed air (canned air or an electric duster) to blow out the chipset heatsink. Hold the chipset fan blades still with a toothpick so they don't spin and damage the bearing. Blow from both sides: through the fins and into the fan intake.

After cleaning, run a stress test. Use HWiNFO64 to watch chipset temperature. If it drops below 80°C under load and doesn't shut down, you're done. If it still hits 95°C+, move to fix #2.

Skip this step if your case has dust filters and you clean them monthly. For everyone else, this solves 60% of thermal shutdown issues.

2. Chipset Fan Dead or Dying

Many modern boards have a small fan on the chipset heatsink. On MSI X570 boards (like the X570 Tomahawk or X570 Ace), these fans are notorious for failing after 12-18 months. The fan stops spinning, or it spins with a grinding noise. Without that fan, the heatsink can't dissipate heat — especially on X570 boards where the chipset draws about 15W.

The reason step 3 works is because the chipset fan is the only active cooling for that area. Passive heatsinks on B450 or H410 boards don't have this problem — they rely on case airflow. But on X570 or Z690 boards with a fan, a dead fan means immediate overheating within minutes of gaming.

Fix: Check if the fan spins when you turn on the PC. If it doesn't, or if it stutters, it's dead. You have two options:

  • Replace the fan — Find the exact fan model (often a 40mm or 50mm fan, e.g., the Everflow Y1240512H on MSI X570 boards). Buy a replacement from AliExpress or Amazon. Remove the heatsink, clean off old thermal pad or paste, install new fan, reapply thermal pad (1.5mm thick usually), and remount.
  • Buy a chipset cooler — Aftermarket active coolers like the Thermalright HR-09 2280 are made for M.2 slots near the chipset. You can also fit a 40mm Noctua NF-A4x10 fan with zip ties if the heatsink has screw holes. This is ugly but works.

Don't just run without the fan. I've seen people do that and end up with a dead chipset after 6 months. The chipset on X570 is a PCIe 4.0 switch — it runs hot by design, around 60°C idle with a fan running.

3. Thermal Pad Dried Out or Wrong Thickness

This is less common but happens on boards older than 2 years. The thermal pad between the chipset and heatsink dries out and loses its ability to transfer heat. Sometimes manufacturers use pads that are too thick (over 2mm) or too thin, causing poor contact.

What's actually happening here is the thermal pad becomes hard and brittle, creating air gaps. Air is a terrible conductor of heat. The chipset might idle at 70-75°C instead of the normal 50-55°C.

Fix: Remove the chipset heatsink (usually held by 2-4 screws on the backside of the motherboard). Peel off the old pad — it'll likely be crumbly. Clean both surfaces with isopropyl alcohol. Apply a new thermal pad of the correct thickness.

For most boards, use 1.5mm thick thermal pads (like Thermalright Odyssey or Arctic TP-3). Some Z690 boards use 0.5mm pads — check your board's manual or search forums. Don't use thermal paste here — paste can squeeze out and short the chipset's tiny components. Pads are safer.

If you don't know the exact thickness, buy a 1.5mm and 2mm pad, and use the one that gives good contact. You'll feel resistance when tightening the screws — that's normal. If the heatsink wobbles, the pad is too thin.
