Installed a new cooler and idle temps jumped? Almost always a mounting pressure or paste issue. Here's the fix.

You just swapped in that shiny new air cooler or AIO. Boot up, check temps, and they're sitting at 55–65°C at idle. Maybe even creeping up to 75°C while doing nothing. Frustrating as hell. I've seen this exact scenario dozens of times — usually with coolers that have a new mounting system (like LGA 1700 or AM5 with offset brackets), or when someone switched from a stock Intel/AMD cooler to a massive dual-tower heatsink.

Why This Happens

The culprit here is almost always uneven mounting pressure or a thermal paste application that's gone wrong. Modern CPUs — especially Ryzen 7000 series and Intel 12th/13th/14th gen — have very thin IHS (integrated heat spreader) designs. If the cooler isn't applying even pressure across the entire IHS, you get hot spots. The sensor reads one core at 65°C while another is at 45°C. The average looks high because the hot core throttles the whole package.

Don't bother with BIOS settings or undervolting right away. That's for after you confirm the mount is solid. Nine times out of ten, the fix is mechanical.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Remove the cooler completely. Clean both the CPU IHS and the cooler base with isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher). Use coffee filters or lint-free cloth — paper towels leave fibers.
  2. Check the backplate. For LGA 1700 and AM5, the backplate must sit perfectly flat. Some aftermarket coolers ship with a backplate that has plastic film on the adhesive. Peel that off if it's there. If the backplate is crooked, pins can short or the mount won't seat right.
  3. Apply thermal paste correctly. For most CPUs, a pea-sized drop in the center (about 4mm diameter) works. For Ryzen with chiplets, a thin line across the die area can help. But don't spread it manually — that introduces air bubbles. The cooler's pressure will spread it.
  4. Tighten in a cross pattern. This is where people screw up. Use a screwdriver, not your fingers. Tighten each screw a little at a time — maybe half a turn per screw, going around like you're torquing a wheel. Stop when you feel resistance. Over-tightening can warp the PCB or push paste out the sides, but under-tightening leaves a gap.
  5. Check for a protective plastic cover. Sounds stupid, but I've seen it multiple times. Some AIO cold plates ship with a clear plastic peel-off. If it's still on, the cooler is basically insulated. Peel it off before mounting.

What to Check If It's Still Hot

If you followed the steps above and temps are still high (over 50°C idle with ambient at 22°C), then it's time to dig deeper.

  • Verify the cooler fan is spinning. Sounds obvious, but some motherboards have a "silent" mode that might keep the CPU fan at zero RPM under low load. Check BIOS or software (HWInfo64, FanControl). If it's spinning at 300 RPM or less, ramp it up to 50% manually and see if temps drop.
  • Check your ambient temperature. If your room is 30°C, idle at 50°C is normal. But if the room is 22°C and you're at 60°C, something's wrong.
  • Try a different cooler orientation. Some cases have poor airflow at the top (if you're using an AIO as intake). For air coolers, make sure the fan blows towards the rear exhaust, not into a solid panel.
  • Update BIOS. Older BIOS versions on AM5 had voltage issues that caused high idle temps even with a perfect mount. Check your motherboard manufacturer's site for a version that fixes default voltage curves.
  • RMA the cooler. I've seen a few dead AIO pumps and warped air cooler bases. If everything else checks out, the cooler itself might be defective.

One More Thing

If you're on a Ryzen 7000 series CPU, they are designed to run hot at idle — up to 50°C is normal. But if you're seeing 60-70°C idle after a cooler swap, that's not normal. The fix above applies. Just don't panic if you see 45°C and it jumps to 50°C under load — that's just how Zen 4 works with its transient voltage spikes.

For Intel 13th/14th gen, idle temps under 40°C are expected with good cooling. If you're at 55°C on a 360mm AIO, your mount is off. Period.
