PC won't boot after installing new RAM — common fixes

Your PC won't POST after a RAM upgrade. Here's what's actually happening and how to fix it without RMA'ing good sticks.

Cause #1: RAM isn't fully seated (most common by far)

You'd think pushing a stick of RAM into a slot is foolproof, but it's the reason maybe 70% of "new RAM no boot" posts exist. What's actually happening here is the gold contacts on the stick aren't making full contact with the motherboard's DIMM slot pins. The stick can look seated—especially if you have a motherboard with a single-side latch design—but one end is slightly lifted.

The fix is simple but you have to do it right: remove the stick, align it so the notch in the contact edge matches the slot's key, and push straight down with firm, even pressure on both ends until you hear a positive click from each latch. For boards with a latch on only one side (common on budget boards), push the stick down until the latch on that side snaps into its notch—the other side will follow automatically. I've seen people stop at the first click and assume it's done, but that's not enough.

Try this first. If your board has four slots, test each stick individually in slot A2 (second from the CPU, the one most boards prefer for single-stick boot). If the PC boots with one stick but not two, one of the sticks is fine and you have a different issue—move to cause #2.

Cause #2: BIOS memory training failure or XMP incompatibility

This is especially common with Ryzen systems and any DDR5 build. The motherboard's BIOS has to "train" the memory controller to talk to the RAM at the rated speed. If you dropped in faster RAM than your previous kit—say, going from 3200 MHz to 3600 MHz—or enabled XMP/EXPO without checking if your CPU's memory controller can handle the speed, the board may fail to train and get stuck in a boot loop or hang with the DRAM debug LED lit.

The real fix here is to clear the CMOS. Don't just remove the battery and wait 30 seconds—that often doesn't drain residual charge in the capacitors. Better method: unplug the power cord from the PSU, press the case power button a few times to discharge caps, then remove the CMOS battery and also short the CLR_CMOS jumper with a screwdriver for 10 seconds. On some boards you can just short the two pins with a metal tool—check your manual for location.

After that, the board will boot with default JEDEC speeds (usually 2133 or 2400 MHz). Your PC will work. Then you can go into BIOS, enable XMP/EXPO, but pay attention to the speed—if it's rated 6000 MHz but your CPU's memory controller tops out at 5600 MHz (some Ryzen 3000-series), manually set it lower. Don't just trust the profile.

Cause #3: Mixing mismatched RAM or wrong slot order

You can't just toss any two sticks of RAM together and expect them to work in dual channel—even if they're the same brand and speed. What's actually happening is the memory controller requires both sticks to have identical timings, ranks, and subtimings at the JEDEC level. Two kits from different batches might have the same XMP profile but different default timing tables. The board tries to train both, fails, and either boots with one channel disabled or just hangs.

If you have two sticks that aren't from the same retail kit, try running them in single-channel mode first (both in the same channel slots—usually slots 1 and 2 or 3 and 4, but check your manual). If that boots, the sticks themselves are fine but they won't run dual channel together. Your options: return one kit and buy a matched set, or live with the performance hit of single-channel.

The other slot-order mistake: putting the RAM in slots 1 and 2 instead of slots 2 and 4 (or A2 and B2 on most boards). The primary slots for a two-stick kit are almost always the second slot from the CPU on each channel. If you used slots 1 and 3, the board might not detect the second channel. Check your motherboard manual explicitly for recommended slot configuration.

Start with cause #1, then #2, then #3. If none works after 20 minutes, you likely have a dead stick or incompatible kit—check your motherboard's QVL list for verified models. Don't RMA the board until you've tested each stick individually in slot A2.
