RAM Not Detected at Full Speed: Fix in 3 Steps

Your PC boots but RAM runs at half speed or shows less than installed. We'll fix it from easiest to hardest.

The 30-Second Fix: Reseat the RAM Sticks

This is the first thing I do every time. RAM modules work loose over time, especially if you move your PC or bump the desk. You don't need to take anything apart — just open the case and press the sticks back in.

What to do:

  1. Shut down your PC and unplug the power cord.
  2. Open the side panel. On most towers, that's two thumbscrews.
  3. Locate the RAM slots — they're long, vertical slots near the CPU, usually with a lever on each end.
  4. Press down on both levers until they click open.
  5. Pull the stick straight out.
  6. Now press it back in firmly. You'll feel a click as the levers snap shut. Don't be shy — RAM needs a solid push.
  7. Repeat for each stick, then plug in power and boot.

What you should see: If the stick was loose, Windows will now show the full capacity (check in Task Manager > Performance > Memory). If you're still short, move to the next step.

This fixes the issue maybe 30% of the time. It's also worth doing if you recently installed a new CPU cooler — you might have knocked the RAM loose while reaching around.

The 5-Minute Fix: Enable XMP or EXPO in BIOS

Here's the real culprit most of the time. Your motherboard sets a safe default speed (like 2133MHz for DDR4 or 4800MHz for DDR5) even if your RAM is rated for 3600MHz or 6000MHz. That's not a defect — it's just conservative. You have to tell the board to use the rated speed.

What to do:

  1. Restart your PC.
  2. Press the BIOS key repeatedly as it boots. Common keys are Delete, F2, or F10. The exact key shows on the first screen — usually bottom-left.
  3. Once in BIOS, look for a setting called XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD). It's usually on the main screen or under an "Overclocking" or "AI Tweaker" tab.
  4. Select it and choose Profile 1 — that's your RAM's advertised speed and timings.
  5. Save and exit. On most boards that's F10, then confirm.

What you should see: The PC will restart once or twice — that's normal. Then go to Task Manager > Performance > Memory and check the speed. It should now show the rated speed (e.g., 3600MHz). If the PC fails to boot after enabling XMP, don't panic. The motherboard will usually retry automatically and revert to safe settings. If it doesn't, do the clear CMOS step below.

One thing I want to stress: you're not overclocking. XMP/EXPO is a factory-tested profile. If your RAM says 3600, it's designed to run at 3600. If the board refuses to boot with it, that's usually a compatibility issue — sometimes a BIOS update fixes it, sometimes you need to set the speed manually (that's the advanced fix).

This step solves the speed problem in 90% of cases. But if you're still seeing less RAM than you installed (like 8GB instead of 16GB), skip XMP and go straight to the next section.

The 15+ Minute Fix: Manual Settings, Slot Check, and Clear CMOS

If you've reseated and enabled XMP but still have issues, it's time to get systematic. This takes a while but it's not hard.

First, check your RAM slots

Most motherboards have 4 slots, and they're not all equal. If you have two sticks, they need to go in specific slots — usually A2 and B2 (the second and fourth slots from the CPU). Check your motherboard manual. If you're not sure, just try the 2nd and 4th slots.

Here's why: if you put them in slots 1 and 3, or side by side, the board might only see one stick or run in single-channel mode (which halves performance).

What to do:

  • Shut down, unplug, and reseat the sticks into the correct slots.
  • Boot and check: if you now see full capacity, you're done. If not, try each stick alone in the first slot to find a dead one.

Second, set manual speed and timings

If XMP won't hold, you can enter the speed manually. Go back to BIOS, find the memory frequency setting, and set it to your RAM's rated speed. Leave timings on Auto for now. Save and boot.

If that still won't boot, try a slightly lower speed. For example, if your RAM is 3600, try 3200. Sometimes the memory controller just can't handle the rated speed with your CPU.

Third, clear CMOS

If everything's still stuck, clear the BIOS. This resets all settings to factory defaults — it won't harm anything.

  1. Shut down and unplug.
  2. Find the CMOS battery on the motherboard — it's a silver, coin-shaped cell.
  3. Remove it, wait 5 minutes, then put it back.
  4. Boot. Your BIOS is now fresh out of the box.

After clearing CMOS, re-enable XMP. If it works now, great. If not, you likely have a hardware incompatibility — consider updating your BIOS (check the motherboard manufacturer's site) or testing the RAM in another PC.

When it's not the RAM

One more thing: if you just installed a new CPU, the memory controller might be the issue. For AMD Ryzen 5000 series, 3600MHz is the sweet spot. For Intel 12th/13th gen, 3200 to 3600 is typical. If your CPU only officially supports 3200, don't push it.

Real-world trigger: I've seen this happen most often after a BIOS update or when someone installs a second pair of RAM sticks that aren't from the same kit. Mixing kits is a recipe for instability. If that's you, remove the older sticks and test with the new ones alone.

If you've done all this and still see half capacity, it's almost certainly a bad stick or a dead slot. Time to RMA.
