Why this happens
You've got new RAM, or you moved your PC, and suddenly it won't POST. The debug LED shows a RAM error, or the board beeps. You swap sticks, clean contacts, reset CMOS — nothing. The RAM itself is fine. The culprit here is almost always the CPU socket, not the DIMM slots.
On Intel LGA sockets, the pins live in the motherboard. On AMD AM4/AM5, they're on the CPU. Either way, if the CPU isn't seated perfectly flat, some memory channels lose connection. And the number one cause of a poor CPU seat is cooler mounting pressure. Too much torque on one corner bends the socket or the CPU substrate. Too little pressure and the CPU lifts slightly. Both cause intermittent contact that looks like a RAM failure.
I've fixed this exact issue dozens of times on systems ranging from i5-9400F builds to Ryzen 5900X workstations. Every time, the owner swears they seated the CPU correctly. And they did. But the cooler pulled it crooked.
Fix steps
- Power down and unplug everything. Ground yourself. Touch the case or use a wrist strap.
- Remove the CPU cooler. If it's an AIO or tower, unscrew diagonally — don't yank it. If it's stuck, twist gently before pulling up.
- Clean the thermal paste from CPU and cooler. Use isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and a lint-free cloth. Don't leave residue — it throws off contact pressure.
- Release the CPU socket lever. Lift the retention arm, then carefully lift the CPU straight up. On AM4, a slight twist helps unstick it.
- Inspect the socket. Use a bright light and magnifier if you have one. Look for bent pins, crud, or a faint line where the CPU edge sat. On LGA, any bent pin is bad news. On AM4, a single bent pin can kill one memory channel.
- If pins are bent, fix them. Use a mechanical pencil tip or a razor blade to gently align them. Don't use a needle — too much pressure. Take photos first so you know which way they should lean.
- Reseat the CPU. Drop it in with the arrows aligned. Don't push down — let it seat naturally. Close the lever smoothly. On AM4, the lever requires firm pressure, but don't force it.
- Mount the cooler with even pressure. Screw in a crisscross pattern. Tighten just until snug, then do another pass. Stop when the springs bottom out. Don't go full gorilla — that's how you re-bend pins.
- Apply fresh thermal paste. A pea-sized dot in the center. Don't spread it manually — the cooler does that.
- Test with one stick of RAM. Put it in the slot labeled A2 (second from the CPU). Power on. If it POSTs, add the other stick. If not, try a different slot to isolate the issue.
If that doesn't work
Sometimes the socket is damaged beyond a quick fix. Before you panic, try these:
- Test with an older CPU. If you have a spare that matches the socket, swap it. If RAM works with that, your original CPU has a dead memory controller.
- Update the BIOS. Some boards have flaky early memory training. A newer BIOS can improve compatibility. Use the BIOS flashback button if the board has one — you don't need a CPU for that.
- Run MemTest86. If the system boots but crashes under load, bad RAM is still possible. Boot from a USB stick and let it run a few passes.
- Check for motherboard standoffs. A screw touching the case underside can short traces and cause random failures. Uncommon, but I've seen it.
If all else fails, the board might have a bad DIMM slot. Try the other slots first. If only one slot works, the board goes in the RMA pile.
Prevention
Don't over-tighten coolers. Ever. Use the screwdriver that fits the screws, not a drill. The springs on your cooler exist for a reason — they regulate pressure. If you've got a liquid cooler, check the backplate sits flush. Uneven backplates cause the same issue.
Also, when you transport a PC, lay it flat. Bouncing in a car can flex the board and micro-fracture solder joints. That's a silent killer.
And if you're building new, consider a motherboard with a memory retry button (ASUS calls it MemOK, MSI has a similar one). It reruns memory training without clearing your BIOS settings. Saves you a headache next time you swap sticks.
