RAM Not Detected? Check Your CPU Cooler Mount Pressure First

A tight CPU cooler can bend the motherboard just enough to kill RAM slots. Loosening and retorquing the cooler often fixes it.

You've probably spent an hour reseating RAM, swapping sticks, and dusting slots. Nothing. One stick works, but two won't? Or slot A2 is dead? Before you RMA the motherboard, there's a good chance your CPU cooler is the problem.

The Fix: Loosen and Retorque Your CPU Cooler

  1. Shut down your PC, unplug the power cable, and wait 10 seconds.
  2. Remove the RAM sticks. Note which slots they came from.
  3. If you have a tower cooler (like a Hyper 212 or Noctua NH-D15), use a screwdriver to loosen each mounting screw by a quarter turn — not all the way. Do this in a criss-cross pattern, same as you would when installing.
  4. If you have an AIO or liquid cooler, loosen the four screws around the pump block by the same quarter turn, again in criss-cross order.
  5. Now retighten them, but stop as soon as you feel resistance. Don't crank them. You want firm, not tight. Over-tightening is the root cause here.
  6. Reinstall the RAM. Push each stick in firmly until both clips click. You'll hear it — that's normal.
  7. Plug the power back in and boot. Check BIOS or Windows System Information to see if all RAM shows up.

After doing this, I've seen PCs go from "Slot A2 not working" to all four sticks recognized properly. The magic is in reducing the mechanical stress on the motherboard's BGA solder joints under the CPU socket.

Why This Works

Modern motherboards are thin — some are only 4 to 6 layers of PCB. When you torque a cooler down too hard, the board bends slightly around the socket. That tiny flex can lift or crack the solder balls connecting the memory controller traces to the DIMM slots.

Typical symptom: Channel B (slots B1 and B2) dies first because it's farthest from the socket, so the bend is most pronounced there. But you can lose any slot.

The fix works because loosening the cooler lets the board spring back flat. Then retightening to the right tension prevents the problem from returning. No need to replace the board or the CPU.

Less Common Variations

1. Motherboard Standoff Short

Sometimes the problem isn't the cooler — it's an extra standoff touching the back of the board behind a memory slot. Check the backplate area. If there's a standoff with no matching screw hole, remove it with pliers.

2. Bent CPU Socket Pins (LGA Only)

If loosening the cooler didn't help, inspect the socket pins under a bright light and magnifier. Bent pins on the memory controller side (usually the top or bottom rows) can kill specific channels. Straighten them with a mechanical pencil tip or razor blade — very carefully.

3. XMP Profile Causing Boot Failure

Some RAM kits won't run at their XMP speed on certain boards. If your system boots but shows half the RAM, try resetting the BIOS to defaults first. Then enable XMP but manually drop the frequency one step (e.g., from 3600 MT/s to 3466 MT/s).

Prevention

When mounting a cooler, use a torque driver set to 0.6 Nm — that's the industry standard for most sockets. If you don't have one, the rule is: tighten until the screw stops turning, then back off half a turn. The cooler should not wiggle, but you shouldn't need a cheater bar on your screwdriver.

For AIO pumps, follow the manual's tightening sequence exactly. Most have spring-loaded screws designed to stop at the right depth. Let the springs do their job.

Also, always use the correct backplate for your socket. Mixing up LGA1151 and LGA1200 backplates can misalign the mounting pressure and bend the board.

Final tip: If the RAM still doesn't show after the cooler fix, try each stick one at a time in every slot. This isolates a dead stick vs. a dead slot. I've seen brand-new kits arrive with one bad module — it happens.
