When This Happens
You hit the power button, fans spin up, but the screen stays black. Sometimes you get a series of beeps — one long, two short, or continuous — and the motherboard's diagnostic LEDs light up near the RAM slots. This is the classic "no POST" scenario, and the culprit is almost always the memory.
I've seen this on everything from old Dell OptiPlexes to custom Ryzen builds. It happens after you install a new stick, move the PC, or sometimes for no reason at all. The trigger might be a dusty slot, a slightly shifted stick, or a new stick that's just not playing nice with your board.
Root Cause
RAM not detected means the motherboard's memory controller isn't seeing any usable module. That can be because:
- The stick isn't fully seated in the slot.
- The slot itself is dead or full of debris.
- The new RAM is incompatible — wrong type, speed, or voltage.
- The CPU cooler is over-tightened, bending the socket and causing bad memory traces. This is more common than you'd think on LGA115x boards.
- CMOS settings got corrupted, especially if you were tweaking XMP profiles.
Most of the time, it's the first one — a seating issue. People don't push hard enough because they're scared of breaking something. You have to press until the retention clips snap shut on their own. But sometimes it's more subtle, and that's where the troubleshooting steps come in.
The Fix — Step by Step
- Power down and unplug. Remove the power cord, then press the case power button for 5 seconds to drain residual charge. Don't skip this.
- Open the case and remove all RAM. Take out every stick. Blow out the slots with compressed air — dust is a silent killer.
- Reseat one stick in the primary slot. That's usually the second slot from the CPU (A2 on most boards), but check your manual. Push it in until the clips click. Don't use excessive force, but make sure it's fully seated.
- Try to boot with just that stick. If it works, great. Add the rest one by one. If it doesn't, move that same stick to another slot.
- Test each stick individually. If a stick works in slot A2 but not in slot B2, the slot might be dead. If a stick doesn't work in any slot, the stick itself is bad.
- Clear the CMOS. If you get no POST even with a known-good stick, reset the BIOS settings. Look for a jumper or button on the board, or pull the round CR2032 battery for 30 seconds. This clears any bad memory training data.
- Check the CPU cooler. If clearing CMOS doesn't help, loosen the cooler screws half a turn each, in a cross pattern. Then try again. I've fixed two machines this way where the cooler was crushing the memory traces.
If It Still Fails
You've tested every stick in every slot, cleared CMOS, and checked the cooler. Still nothing? Then you're looking at a hardware failure.
- Try a different stick of RAM, even if it's old or lower capacity. You're just testing the board's memory controller.
- If the new RAM doesn't work but the old RAM does, the new stick is either incompatible or dead. Check the motherboard's QVL list for supported models. And yes, that list matters more than you think.
- If no RAM works at all, the motherboard or CPU is the problem. That's rare, but it happens. The memory controller lives in the CPU on modern chips, so a bent pin in the socket can cause this. Inspect the socket with a bright light and a magnifying glass.
That's the whole drill. Ninety percent of the time it's a seating issue, so start there. And for the love of tech, don't start replacing parts until you've done the basic steps — I've seen people buy new RAM when the old stick just needed a good push.
