It feels like your computer died, and you're probably thinking the motherboard or processor is toast. But hold on. Last month, a client brought in a Dell OptiPlex that wouldn't start. The owner was ready to buy a new PC. I found the front panel connector had popped off. Took me 30 seconds to fix. 1. Loose or Bad Front Panel Connector

This is the #1 cause. The power button on the front of your case connects to the motherboard through a tiny two-pin connector. These connectors are cheap plastic, and they can slip off or get jostled loose when you move the PC, plug in a USB cable, or even when the case vibrates from a fan. I've seen it happen just from cleaning dust.

Fix: Open your PC case. Look for the front panel header on the motherboard — it's usually a small block of pins near the bottom edge. On most modern boards (like ASUS Prime or MSI MAG series), it's labeled something like F_PANEL or JFP1. Find the two pins that are for the power switch. They're often labeled PWR_SW or POWER SW in tiny text on the motherboard itself, or on a sticker next to the header. The connector is a small black or white plug with two wires going to it. Push it firmly onto those two pins. It doesn't matter which way the wires go — it's not polarized.

If the connector looks physically damaged (cracked or bent pins), you can temporarily jump-start the PC by touching the two power switch pins with a flathead screwdriver (metal tip only, careful not to touch other pins). If the PC starts, you know the connector or the button is bad. You can buy a replacement front panel connector kit for about $5 or just wire a separate power button from an old case. I've used a paperclip in a pinch — twist it around the pins.

2. Dead Power Supply (PSU)

If the front panel connector is tight and the PC still won't turn on, the power supply is the next suspect. A bad PSU can fail silently — no smoke, no smell. It just stops delivering power. This happens most often with cheap no-name PSUs or units that are over 5 years old. I had a client last month whose 7-year-old HP Compaq PSU just gave up. The PC was in a dusty workshop, and the capacitor inside the PSU had bulged.

Fix: First, check if the PSU fan spins when you press the power button. If it doesn't, it's almost certainly dead. But you can do a simple test. Unplug the PSU from the wall, open the case, and disconnect the main 24-pin ATX power cable from the motherboard. You'll see a big connector with 24 wires. Look at the wires: there's usually a green wire on one end and a black wire next to it. Use a paperclip or a small piece of wire to connect the green pin to any black pin that's next to it. Plug the PSU back into the wall. If the PSU fan spins, the power supply is probably fine (but it might still be weak). If the fan doesn't spin, the PSU is dead — replace it.

For a more accurate test, borrow a PSU tester from a friend or buy one for $10. It'll light up and tell you if all voltages are correct.

If the fan does spin but the system still doesn't start, the PSU might not be delivering enough voltage to the motherboard. Try a different power supply if you have one.

3. Dead Motherboard or CMOS Issue

If the front panel connector is good and the PSU passes the test, the motherboard might be the problem. But before you throw it away, try resetting the CMOS. The CMOS stores BIOS settings, and a corrupted setting can prevent the PC from starting. I've seen this happen after a power surge or a Windows update that messed with boot settings.

Fix: Unplug the PC from the wall. Open the case. Find the round silver battery on the motherboard — it's a CR2032 coin cell. Gently pop it out with your fingernail or a small screwdriver. Wait 30 seconds. Put the battery back in. Plug the PC back in and try the power button. If the PC starts, you're good. The BIOS reset fixed it.

If that doesn't work, you might have a dead motherboard. But before you give up, check for any swollen capacitors on the board — they look like little cylinders with a bulging top. If you see any, the board is toast. Also, make sure the CPU power cable (8-pin or 4-pin near the CPU) is plugged in tight. I've seen that come loose after moving a PC.
