RAM Not Detected? Fixing Memory Slots on ASUS TUF B450M
So you've got a RAM stick that's not showing up in BIOS, or the system won't post at all. The culprit here is almost always a seating issue, not dead hardware. I've fixed this exact problem on countless ASUS TUF B450M boards — and most other boards too, honestly. Don't panic and don't buy new RAM yet. Work through these fixes in order. Most people solve this in under five minutes.
Step 1: The 30-Second Reseat (and check the obvious)
Shut down the machine, unplug the PSU (yes, unplug it — don't be lazy), and open the case. Remove all RAM sticks. Look at the contacts on the bottom of each stick. If you see any crud or oxidation, that's your problem right there.
Now reseat the sticks one at a time. It's a common mistake to not push hard enough. RAM needs a firm, even press until the clips click into place on both ends. You'd be surprised how many "dead" slots are just a stick sitting slightly crooked.
While you're in there, check the slot clips. On the TUF B450M, the top clip is usually fixed, and the bottom one is the lever. If the lever doesn't move smoothly, something's blocking it.
After reseating, try to boot. If it works, done. If not, move on.
Step 2: The 5-Minute Clean and Swap (isolate the slot or stick)
Still not detected? Let's isolate. Power off, unplug, and remove all RAM again. Grab a clean pencil eraser — the white or pink kind, not the ones on mechanical pencils — and gently rub the gold contacts on the stick. This removes oxidation that blocks connectivity. Then blow out the slot with canned air. A can of compressed air is a must-have for any sysadmin; if you don't have one, you can use a hairdryer on cold, but that's less effective.
Now here's the systematic part: install one stick in the A2 slot (second slot from the CPU). That's the primary slot for most builds. Boot. If it posts, great. Now move that same stick to B2. If it posts, the stick is fine and both slots work. If it doesn't post in B2, you've got a bad slot. If it doesn't post in A2, you've got a bad stick or the CPU socket has a bent pin — but let's not think about that yet.
Test each stick the same way. If you only have two sticks, this takes five minutes. Don't skip this step — it's the only way to know if you're dealing with a slot issue or a stick issue.
Step 3: The 15-Minute Advanced Fix (CMOS clear, BIOS update, and the physical stuff)
If you've confirmed the stick works in one slot but not another, or if nothing you do gets all RAM detected, here's what to do next.
Clear the CMOS
A stuck CMOS can cause weird memory detection issues. Unplug the PSU, then pop the coin battery off the board (CR2032). Wait 30 seconds. Put it back. This resets the BIOS to defaults and clears any misconfigured memory training data.
Update the BIOS
This is more of a “have you tried turning it off and on again” for the motherboard. The TUF B450M's early BIOS versions had flaky RAM compatibility — I've seen sticks not detected until after a BIOS flash. Grab the latest BIOS from ASUS's website, stick it on a FAT32 USB drive, and use the BIOS Flashback button on the rear I/O if your board has one (the B450M Pro S does, the regular TUF B450M Plus doesn't, so check your model). If no Flashback, you'll need a working CPU to boot into BIOS and update. That's a pain, but it's a known fix for this board.
Check for bent CPU pins or debris in the socket
If you're confident the RAM and slots are fine, lift the CPU cooler, release the CPU, and inspect the socket. A single bent pin in the DDR4 memory channel area can kill one or two slots. Look for pins that don't line up with the rest. If you see one, you can try to bend it back with a mechanical pencil tip — it's delicate work, but I've saved boards that way. Also check for dust or stray thermal paste in the socket.
Test with single channel (if dual channel is the only issue)
If the system posts but only shows half the RAM (e.g., 8GB instead of 16GB), and both sticks work individually in A2, the issue might be a memory channel mismatch. Try installing both sticks in the same channel — A1 and A2 — even though it's not optimal for performance. If it posts with full capacity, you've got a motherboard channel problem. That's a board-level fault, and honestly, I'd start planning a replacement if you need dual channel. But note: for daily use, single channel is fine for most things — just don't expect top-tier gaming performance.
What Skipping These Steps Will Cost You
I've seen too many people RMA a perfectly good RAM kit because they didn't reseat it properly. Or worse, they buy a new motherboard when a quick BIOS update would've fixed it. Work through these steps in order — you're not wasting time, you're eliminating variables.
When to Give Up and Replace
If you've done all of this — cleaned, swapped, cleared CMOS, updated BIOS — and a known-good stick still won't post in one slot, that slot is dead. You can try running in single channel if the other slot works, but if you need two sticks, it's time for a new board. The TUF B450M is a solid board, but no board lasts forever.
And one more thing: if you're using an APU (like a Ryzen 5 2400G), remember that system RAM is your video memory. A dead slot means you're losing performance across the board — not just memory capacity. Don't ignore it.
