Speed Test Shows 50Mbps But You Pay for 500Mbps

Your internet plan promises 500Mbps but speed tests show 50Mbps. This is almost always a Wi-Fi issue, not your ISP. Here's the fix.

You just ran a speed test on your phone. It says 50Mbps down. But you pay your ISP for 500Mbps. The bill doesn't lie—your plan is 500Mbps. The trigger is almost always the same: you're testing over Wi-Fi, and you're not in the same room as the router. Maybe you're in the kitchen, or the bedroom down the hall. That's the moment panic sets in. You think the ISP is ripping you off. But 9 times out of 10, it's not them.

What's really happening

Your ISP delivers full speed to your modem. That signal is solid—copper or fiber all the way to your house. The weak link is your home Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is radio waves. Walls, floors, microwaves, even your neighbor's Wi-Fi can interfere. The 2.4GHz band (the one most devices fall back on) tops out around 100Mbps in perfect conditions. In real homes, you're lucky to get 50Mbps. The 5GHz band can hit 500Mbps, but it doesn't go through walls well. So if you're two rooms away, your phone drops to 2.4GHz and you get 50Mbps. That's not the ISP. That's physics.

How to fix it

We're going to rule out your ISP first, then fix the Wi-Fi. You'll need a laptop with an Ethernet port and about 10 minutes. Here's the exact order.

  1. Plug your laptop directly into the modem or router with an Ethernet cable. Not Wi-Fi. A physical cable. Wait 10 seconds after plugging it in so the connection stabilizes.
  2. Open a browser and go to speedtest.net. Use the Ookla one. Don't use the ISP's own speed test—they sometimes cache results to look better.
  3. Run the test. Wait for it to finish. If you see 450Mbps to 500Mbps on Ethernet, your ISP is fine. The problem is your Wi-Fi.
  4. If the Ethernet test also shows 50Mbps, call your ISP. Tell them: "I'm hardwired directly to the modem and I'm getting 50Mbps on a 500Mbps plan." They'll check your line. But if Ethernet gave you full speed, move to step 5.
  5. Move your phone or laptop to the same room as the router. Stand 3 feet away. Run the speed test again on Wi-Fi. If it's now 300Mbps or higher, the issue was distance and walls.
  6. Check which Wi-Fi band your device is on. On a phone, look at the Wi-Fi details. If it says 2.4GHz, switch to 5GHz. Most routers combine them into one name (SSID). You can split them in the router settings if needed.
  7. Restart your router and modem. Unplug both for 30 seconds. Plug the modem back in first, wait 2 minutes until all lights are solid. Then plug the router back in. Wait another 2 minutes. Then test again.

  10. Move your router to a central location, off the floor. Don't hide it behind the TV. Don't put it in a cabinet. Put it on a shelf, waist-high or higher, in the room where you use Wi-Fi most. This alone can double your speed.

What to check if it's still slow

If you've done all that and you're still stuck at 50Mbps, here's what to check next.

  • Your device's Wi-Fi capability. Some older laptops only support 2.4GHz and max out at 150Mbps. Phones from 2018 or earlier might not support 5GHz. Check your device specs. If it's old, you won't get 500Mbps over Wi-Fi no matter what.
  • Your Ethernet cable. If you're testing with an old Cat5 cable (not Cat5e or Cat6), it maxes out at 100Mbps. Replace it with a Cat6 cable—they're cheap and can handle 1Gbps.
  • Background downloads or uploads. Someone in your house might be streaming 4K video, downloading a game, or running a backup. Check your router's traffic log or just ask everyone to pause for a minute. Then test again.
  • VPN software. VPNs can cut your speed in half. Disconnect any VPN before running a speed test. If you're on a work laptop with a forced VPN, that's your bottleneck.
  • Your ISP might be throttling specific traffic. Some ISPs slow down streaming sites. Try a different speed test server—one not in your city. If the results vary wildly, that's a sign of throttling. Call your ISP and ask them directly.
  • Your router might be outdated. If your router is more than 4 years old, it might not support the latest Wi-Fi standards (Wi-Fi 5 or 6). A new router can fix this. I recommend something like the TP-Link Archer AX55—under a hundred bucks and handles 500Mbps easily.

One last thing: don't trust a single speed test. Run it three times, at different times of day.
