Wi-Fi Network Not Showing Up – What Actually Fixed It

When This Happens

You open the Wi-Fi list on your laptop, phone, or tablet, and the network you normally connect to just isn't there. Neighbors' networks show up fine — yours is gone. This happens most often after a router restart, a firmware update, or when you're trying to connect a new device that only supports 2.4GHz (like an old Kindle or a smart thermostat) to a router that defaults to 5GHz. I had a client last month who couldn't get his Ring doorbell to see the network — turned out the router was broadcasting only on 5GHz and the doorbell couldn't see it.

Root Cause

This isn't your device being broken. It's almost always one of three things:

  • Band mismatch – your device only supports 2.4GHz, but the router is only broadcasting 5GHz (or vice versa).
  • SSID broadcast is disabled – someone turned off the "broadcast SSID" setting in the router, which hides the network name.
  • Channel congestion or interference – the router's set to a channel that your device can't scan properly (common with older laptops and some Android phones).

The Fix – Step by Step

Step 1: Check Which Bands Your Router Is Broadcasting

Log in to your router's admin panel. Open a browser and type in your router's IP address — usually 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, or 10.0.0.1. Log in with the admin credentials (check the sticker on the router if you don't know them). Look for a section called "Wireless," "Wi-Fi Settings," or "Radio." Most routers have separate settings for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Make sure both bands are enabled and have the same SSID (or different ones, which is fine too) — but at least one band should match what your device supports. A ton of routers ship with 2.4GHz turned off by default now. Stupid, but true.

Step 2: Turn Off Band Steering (If Enabled)

Many modern routers have a feature called "band steering" or "smart connect" that tries to push devices to 5GHz automatically. Sounds nice, but it causes tons of issues with older devices. Go to the wireless settings and turn off band steering. Then reboot the router. I've seen this fix the missing network problem more times than anything else.

Step 3: Enable SSID Broadcast

Under the same wireless settings, look for a checkbox labeled "Enable SSID Broadcast," "Enable Wireless Broadcast," or "Visibility." Make sure it's checked. If it was unchecked, that's your culprit — someone accidentally hid the network. Check it, save, and reboot.

Step 4: Change the Wi-Fi Channel to 1, 6, or 11

Some devices — especially older ones — can't scan channels above 11 on 2.4GHz or above 48 on 5GHz. If your router is set to auto-channel and it picks a high channel, your device might miss it. Set 2.4GHz to one of channels 1, 6, or 11 (these are the only non-overlapping ones anyway). For 5GHz, try channel 36 or 40. This is a quick fix that often works when nothing else does.

Step 5: Reboot Both Devices

After you change the router settings, unplug the router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for it to fully boot up (2-3 minutes). On your device, turn Wi-Fi off and back on. Open the list again — the network should show up. If it doesn't, go to the next step.

Still Not Working?

If you've done all the steps above and the network still won't appear, try these:

  • Check for MAC filtering. If your router has a MAC filter enabled and your device's MAC isn't on the allowed list, the router won't even advertise the network to that device. Log in, find the MAC filter settings, and either add your device's MAC or disable the filter temporarily.
  • Test with another device. If your laptop can't see the network but your phone can, it's a device-specific issue — update the Wi-Fi driver on the laptop or check if it's in airplane mode (yes, I've had clients miss that).
  • Reset the router to factory defaults. If nothing else worked and you're sure the router isn't bricked, press and hold the reset button on the back for 10 seconds. Then set it up from scratch. Pain in the neck? Yes. But it's the nuclear option that almost always works.

One last thing: if you're trying to connect an IoT device like a smart bulb or a Wi-Fi camera, make sure the router's 2.4GHz band is enabled and the device is within 15 feet of the router during setup. Those things are notoriously picky about signal strength and band compatibility.
