You just installed a shiny new kit of DDR4-3600 RAM. You boot into Windows, open Task Manager, and see... 2133MHz. Don't panic. That's not a defective stick. It's just that your motherboard defaults to a safe, conservative speed until you tell it otherwise.
The fix is a BIOS setting called XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD). I've walked dozens of users through this over the years, and it's the same story every time: they think they got scammed, but it's just a missing profile. Let's get you sorted.
Why Your RAM Isn't Running at Its Rated Speed
When you buy RAM rated at 3600MHz, that rating isn't automatic. The memory chips can handle it, but the motherboard won't run them that fast out of the box. Instead, it runs them at the JEDEC standard speed—usually 2133MHz or 2400MHz—to guarantee stability with any stick.
The rated speed is stored in a special profile on the RAM stick itself. Intel calls it XMP (Extreme Memory Profile). AMD motherboards use DOCP (Direct Overclock Profile) or sometimes just call it XMP too. This profile tells the motherboard the exact voltage, timings, and frequency the memory is tested to handle. You have to explicitly turn it on.
I remember the first time I skipped this step on a Ryzen build. I spent an hour blaming the CPU before I realized I'd left the memory at default. It's a rite of passage.
How to Enable XMP or DOCP
This process is nearly identical across all modern motherboards. The exact label varies, but you're looking for a setting called XMP, DOCP, EOCP, or Memory Profile.
- Restart your computer and press Delete or F2 repeatedly as it boots to enter the BIOS. Some boards use F12 or F10, but Delete and F2 are the most common.
- Once in the BIOS, look for the overclocking section. On ASUS boards it's often under Ai Tweaker, on MSI it's OC, on Gigabyte it's M.I.T., and on ASRock it's OC Tweaker. If you're lost, use the search function in the BIOS (usually F9) and type “XMP”.
- Find the setting labeled AI Overclock Tuner, Memory Boost, or just XMP. Change it from Auto to XMP Profile 1 (or the only profile listed). On AMD boards, you might see DOCP Standard as an option.
- Save and exit. Usually that's F10, then confirm. Your system will restart, and likely reboot once or twice while it retrains the memory. Let it cycle.
- After booting into Windows, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and click the Performance tab, then Memory. Check the speed. It should now show your rated speed—or close to it.
That's it. Most of the time, it's a two-minute fix. But sometimes it's not that clean.
When XMP Won't Apply or Causes Crashes
Maybe you enabled XMP, but the system won't boot, or it boots but crashes during gaming. This is where the frustration hits. Here's what to check:
Update Your BIOS
Motherboard manufacturers are constantly improving memory compatibility. If you're on an older BIOS, it might not know how to handle your specific RAM kit. Check your motherboard manufacturer's website for a BIOS update. This solves more XMP problems than anything else I've seen.
Try a Different Slot Configuration
Wait, you did put the sticks in the correct slots, right? If you have two sticks on a four-slot board, they need to be in slots A2 and B2 (second and fourth from the CPU). Check your motherboard manual. Wrong slots can cause instability or prevent XMP from working at all.
Manual Timing Override
If XMP still fails, you can enter the timings manually. On the RAM box or the label on the stick, you'll see something like 16-18-18-38 and a voltage like 1.35V. In your BIOS, set the memory voltage, then manually enter the primary timings, and set the frequency to the rated speed. This is more tedious but often works when the profile is corrupted.
Test Each Stick Individually
Sometimes one stick has a bad XMP profile. Remove one stick and try enabling XMP. If it works, swap them. If only one fails, you've found your culprit and it's time for a replacement.
If It Still Fails
You've tried XMP, you've updated the BIOS, you've fiddled with manual timings, and it still won't run above 2133MHz. It's possible your CPU's memory controller just can't handle that speed. This happens more on older CPUs or when running four sticks instead of two. Try dropping the speed one step down, like 3200MHz if you bought 3600MHz. That will still be a solid boost.
If you're on a Ryzen system, remember that the infinity fabric clock (FCLK) is tied to memory speed. Aim for a 1:1 ratio—DDR4-3600 with FCLK at 1800MHz is the sweet spot. You can set that manually too, but that's a deeper dive. Start with XMP and see how far you get.
